Thinking of getting a Makita 2704... Or is there better for the money?

Thanks a lot! I haven't seen either of those before. I suspect I glossed over them on the Ax site due to the look, but it's definitely worthy of consideration.

Thinking of getting a Makita 2704... Or is there better for the money?

Thanks man, that's good to know. I am SO on the fence between these two. I love the R&P fence, but there are some reviews saying the Makita is capable of higher accuracy. Does the 90 and 45 degree stop on the Dewalt snap-in? Or do you have to check it each time?

Thinking of getting a Makita 2704... Or is there better for the money?

I'm looking for a small footprint saw with accurate cuts, for hobby work, guitar laminate necks, picture frames, boxes etc. I can't fit a cast iron table in my shop, but I can fit an ally-topped one on my bench (I don't think they do an iron one for benchtops?). I'd love a Festool TKS80 or a...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but thanks, I guess?

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Yeah, I figured that out about BU planes today while looking at them in detail. Cheers, though. I can get the frog back to widen the mouth gap, but as soon as I adjust it to cutting depth, it closes the mouth completely (on the record, not on the stanley, which is OK for fine shavings and...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

But... how? That blade is even thicker than the LN, isn't it? I've tried mine on my Stanley No.4 and it has the same issue as the Record, in that it runs out of space in the mouth and touches the toe side of it when at cutting depth. I will mention that the Stanley (1940s) feels like a much...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

I'm in Middlesbrough, NE. Looking at this: tsunesaburo-aogami-laminated-plane-blade-50mm-2in at the moment. It seems like a good bit of kit. I'm using a honing guide and sticking with the original angle, but the poor quality steel seems to be a common issue with this plane. I've renovated 3...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Thanks for that, very interesting. The CB is only a problem due to the length of the arms from the yoke/y-lever. The extra thickness doesn't seem to be an issue at all, but I'm not 100% sure. It all seems to be due to the mouth and angle of the blade tip being further forward. I've got a...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

OK, cheers. I was hanging on to hope, but I can see that it's not going to work out. I'd like to use these LN parts in something, but I can't afford or get an LN here in the UK (no stock for a while now, it seems). I've been looking at the Quangsheng planes, wondering if it would fit that as...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

I've seen a video on that. I should probably have a go at it while I save up for something that can handle it while also being adjustable.

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Yeah, I definitely have both problems. I've held up both my new LN and my new Hock CBs against the original Record and they are both 1.5-2mm closer away from the mouth end. Both my Stanley No.4 and Record No. 5 have the same distance, so LN and Hock are shorter (and shorter overall). I've...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

I don't think so... I haven't thought of that, but it seems like it would only half-fix the lever-arm length issue. If the hole were deeper, so it could reach it, it would have a different angle and potentially slip off or more easily break the yoke. I don't know, though. The more I've...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Wow! Soooo shiiinnnny! I want one! I feel like I probably will need it, so I should get it right now. No, no, stop it! Count to 10!

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

You're right, I've had another look (while trying to get a photo, but it's really hard to see the problem in a photo) and I think the longer lever arms might actually do the trick. They'll help force the breaker down, while also keeping a grip on the adjustment knob. I didn't know they...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

I've just had another look and I suspect I may have to modify the mouth, from what I'm seeing, but the lever is definitely an issue, so I'll see how I go. It seems like even with the lever detached, I can't fit the mouth while also getting support from the whole frog face (i.e. when the blade...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

I have, but it has the same (similar?) issue. I'm not 100% if the lever linked above will fix it, but at £5.80, it's worth a shot. Rather that than changing the shape of the iron!

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Thanks for the response. I tried that. I used the frog adjustment screw and even loosened the front screws and re-set it for more depth, but it's the shortness of the blade that seems to be the issue. I'll have a look at that y-lever, cheers for the link! Update: Ordered a couple (I got...

Fitting Lie Neilsen blade to my Record No.5

Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone else has tried to do this? I've got an Irwin Record No.5 jack plane (14" with 2" blade). It's a year old and dubious quality, but good enough for my needs, however, I'm already fed up of sharpening it. It seems to hold its edge for several hours (while I'm...

    Danish oil smell

If you want a really nice semi gloss finish with danish oil, sand while coating it. I.e. pour your danish oil on and use sandpaper to rub it in. I did 6 coats over 6 days like this for an iroko desk and the finish is just beautiful. The smell lingered for several weeks, though. The bigger the...

    New plane is bladeless

I suppose they were in a quantum juxtaposition of correct wrong-ness.
