    Thought on AI

So,; 1. Consistency: 2. Efficiency: 3. Minimizing Errors: 4. Precision Work: 5. Physical Strain: These are all invalid and hove no place if using the tool on the actual job. Do you ever give a detailed explanation for the things you post or all they all just broad, knee-jerk responses? I...

Saying it's "wrong on several points" is not an answer. It may be a bland, generic answer but nothing is incorrect. 1. Consistency: 2. Efficiency: 3. Minimizing Errors: 4. Precision Work: 5. Physical Strain: None of the reasons are invalid It also said "Sharpening guides can still be...

Council fined £20k for saw injury - Saw Stop would have prevented this

Using push sticks is a solution in some situations, it's not a one size fits all answer to tablesaw safety. I agree that SawStop causes complacency with many who use them, though they don't typically admit or realize it. I say do what ever is comfortable for you to keep your hands away from the...

Council fined £20k for saw injury - Saw Stop would have prevented this

Everyone grows up/learns in different ways. Here in the states, long fences are common, just like dado blades and just like personal methods of work and many other aspects of woodworking. I've been at this for several decades and yes, I still feed wood into a table saw with my hands, I still use...

Council fined £20k for saw injury - Saw Stop would have prevented this

So if you're unfortunate (or stupid) enough to actually touch the blade it's free. If it's triggered in some other way, like some damp timber, they you pay. Makes perfect sense to me. Maybe SawStop should be like a video game, you get three triggers then game over, you can't buy anymore cartridges.

He thinks this is a caravan…

Rules, regulations, council decisions, I'm sorry, this thing is a shed. Wouldn't it need to be licensed, have wheels and lighting (be road worthy) to be considered a caravan?

Council fined £20k for saw injury - Saw Stop would have prevented this

Back to the original story; I'm a firm believer in proper training but even If a SawStop had been used, wouldn't triggering it need to be reported? I suspect that each triggering would invite a visit from H&S and the only thing that would be different in this situations is, that the man would...

Council fined £20k for saw injury - Saw Stop would have prevented this

If I teach someone how to use a tablesaw safely, properly, then they have the knowledge to operate most any tablesaw the same way. If you just purchase a SawStop, then that's the only "safe" saw idiots can operate "safely". When was the last time you touched a stove to see if it really was hot?

    Circular Saw Vs Track Saw

I can remember one of my first carpentry jobs, back in the late 1980's. When we were cutting plywood for flooring we did this thing where we marked a line and then used a circular saw and cut at the line. Tools required, circular saw, straight edge and pencil Little did I know that in the...

    Lets see your wood

Just had some logs dropped off this morning. Diameter of the larger ones is 24" (600mm) approx. Nothing too fancy, just Monterey pine (Radiata Pine) https://www.wood-database.com/radiata-pine/ I'll be getting a second load later today It might end up being construction lumber but it was a good...

    Learning woodwork from youtube

I had to laugh when he said his router bit was 20 years old. How old was he when he bought it, or is he just playing with the tools in dads shop?

Table Saw Jig or Lathe Jig??

Like you, I'm not a fan of this process but as many times as I've seen it done, she does it the best, safest, that I've seen.

How to enthuse a 4 year old

When I was that age, we had toys called "wooden blocks". You could build anything you wanted out of them, the only limit was your imagination. Them came the Erector Set (Meccano) and then Lego

I start behind the door and work my way around, which ever way it happens to be.

Bandsaw sled hands down is the way to go, IMO

Why are some router tables made up of cast iron but not others?

I have to agree with Delany on this. Many people hobbist or not, don't put a value on their time. I build things because I can but also can't always be consumed with building something that will take x amount of time in some cases. Purchasing is sometimes the better option, even if you can build...
