Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

There may be more space in the country but my shop is still cramped

I agree with you but there's one huge problem, other than publishers dying off every other day. You get all kinds of grief when you decide to dictate what's safe and what's not. I've been a moderator of a wood turning site for years, and at one time we wanted to introduce some video content...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

I would guess or perhaps bet, that if a network were to air an in depth craft program, wood, ceramics or whatever, that it would be much more popular than what they who are in charge seem to think. I feel they may have lost their opportunity though. If something like I described were available...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

Competition programs have time limits as part of the brief that the competitors are directed to abide by. If you don't like seeing people run out of time, watch something else, it's all part of the drama. Educational shows don't have time constraints and typically use completed pieces as a...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

As a Yank, I'd say you guys hit it pretty much spot on. Yes, we like big old iron, because it lasts. It was built at a time when a machine could be maintained almost indefinitely. Not to mention, many of the newer tools ask a premium price for a watered down version of the old tools we loved, as...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

The DIY shows here are, for the most part, unwatchable. Even the original This Old House, they don't renovate much anymore, they simply destroy/remove the old construction and replace with all the new products. The other goofy shows where some attractive person in their late 20's has all the...

Who's got it better US or UK Woodworkers?

YouTube is dominated by guys in the U.S. who think they're woodworkers. 90% of them are content creators, there is little depth to their woodworking knowledge or skill. More clicks does not equal more skill. In the states we might have more access to machines and products but with the...

I got curious and knew that all this convenience came at a price. So I located their website, https://www.diamondpiers.com/ Then found a couple of sites that actually sold them. https://builderswarehouse.com/diamond-pier-dp7563-foundation-kit.html?gad_source=1...

There are certainly application for these little things but we'll have to wait and see. Every area seems to have it's own building codes and requirements like, water tables, frost-lines, utilities, soil composition, and on and on. I think they're going to need to pass a lot of tests before they...

    Timber framing engineering

From the website I linked to, there is a free pdf document (plan catalog) full of plans. https://timberframehq.com/ The plan on page 14 looks like what the OP is interested in. A small, starter level shed.

This strikes me as another one of those things. Who would have ever thought about driving a stake in the ground to keep things in place??? Also you still need to be aware of where you're driving those stakes. Where I live, electric, gas, tel, internet, etc, are all underground. You're required...

    Glue or not to glue

I still don't understand what your sticking point is about T&G. What if it was just a wide (glued together) flat panel? Would that make a difference in your mind? With all due respect, to the "informed UK sources"; This is only T&G for the appearance sake, it really makes no difference what the...

    Glue or not to glue

I had also made a matching planter with similar construction, is this okay? I did glue those three together, did I break a rule? please let me know, I done want to get fined. All kidding aside, it's nothing special or out of the norm, just a floating panel,

    Glue or not to glue

So when the piece in the center needs to expand, it has to push both sides 500mm? Why would it catch? Why would it split? There is nothing holding it in position other than gravity and a little friction. BTW this is 1800mm and has moved freely for 10 years. This is nothing more than a basic...

    Glue or not to glue

Let me be perfectly clear the T&G boards are glued to each other NOT the frame. It's nothing more than a large floating panel, no different than a solid piece. There is no reason that it should fail. Explain your concern with "board splitting" what board and why. The purpose of T&G is to cover...

    US Election November 5th

Well, since I'm not 100 years old and a diplomat attached to the UN, how on earth would I know why our grandfathers and great grandfathers did what they did. I don't have a crystal ball that can see the future. You're the one with all the answers, you tell me. You seem to think they knew it...

    Glue or not to glue

I've glued large panels of T&G without any issue what so ever. If you really understand wood movement then you should understand that making a single wide panel from several pieces glued together is no different that a single solid panel, just stronger This planter is just shy of 10 years old...

    Glue or not to glue

Making a solid panel will make the entire structure stiffer. There are many ways to approach this. Also, you need the same amount of room to accommodate movement of several small panels, as you do for 1 large panel, the panel is the same size no matter how you divide it up.
