Another look at grain orientation and joint strength.

I have to agree, total nonsense. There seems to be a rash of younger content creators, trying to pass themselves off as woodworkers, trying to tell us we're stupid. From the Glue myth ***** to this ridiculous video. None of these testing rigs or scenarios come close to real world use, just...

    Accu-ish Slice

Thanks for your reply, I do appreciate it

    Accu-ish Slice

With respect, what does this jig provide you that you can;t achieve with setting the fence and cutting? A properly tuned and adjusted saw should be able to repeatedly cut uniform boards without issue. Using an accessory carriage type of system seems redundant. What am I missing?

    Metal band on chisel handle?

In the states, the metal ring at the chisel end is called a ferrule, the metal ring at the top of the handle is called a hoop. It gets confusing reading posts sometimes, literally not knowing what end of the chisel some are referring to. Separated by a common language.

    Steb centres

I think it's a distinction without a difference. Many names for the same operation. The device allows the wood to revolve after a catch, remaining captures between centers .

    Steb centres

I agree A steb center is basically designed to be a slip clutch, an extra level of insurance to avoid an accident or injury. Only after the OP gains experience would I advise modifying the teeth.

    Veritas Scraper Burnisher for Turners

The burr from grinding is far weaker than a burr formed by a burnisher. The burr from a burnisher is drawn out and as a result creates a work hardened cutting edge. The burr from a grinder is just an artifact of the process, just a byproduct. It is initially sharp but is quite weak and wears...

Shellac as a finish in UK

The most popular here in the states is Zinsser® Bulls Eye® Shellac https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/zinsser-products/woodcare/bulls-eye-shellac and/or Zinsser® SealCoat™ Universal Sanding Sealer...

Shellac as a finish in UK

French polish is a process NOT a product. Any type of shellac can be applied using the French polish technique

    Watching accident videos

Yes but the accident in the OP video was 100% avoidable, strictly operator error. To me, these are not helpful at all. Especially with no good explanation of how to perform the task safely. Whatever you do, please be safe

Advice to a 15 yo wanting a woodwork career

Well, I'll add if I may, a few things I haven't seen mentioned. Does this person have any skills? Are they good at their craft? It's one thing to want to be a woodworker, it's another to be good at it or have a natural talent for it. Can they complete projects? Have they had any of their work...

    Watching accident videos

I'd be willing to bet you could find several videos on YT about "when stump grinders go wrong" or something similar. There is no vetting on YT about what one can present and that's fine but this puts the onus on the viewer to have a half a brain minimum. Unfortunately this can't be policed and...

    MFT - Why?

This seems to have gone from a "Why use an MFT" to simply bashing T-Track, as if it's all the same. Here in the states, T-track is commonly found in sizes that accept 1/4", 5/16" and 3//8" bolts. There are a myriad of accessories, such as intersections, clamps, stops and so on. There is also no...

    Watching accident videos

A little late to this but it was discussed at length on another forum I'm a member of. Personally, I usually don't watch these videos, if you need photos or images of accidents and gore to remind you of the potential dangers, you shouldn't be using power tools. The only thing dangerous in this...

Segmented bowls etc and or turning from planks

You made quite a lot of progress and addressed many things. I'll try to answer a few. Mounting can be done a million and one ways but often a simple glue block is the easiest and safest. Glue blocks hold securely and are simply pared away when the piece is finished. Always measure the cut. Set...
