    Harrogate Show

Agree with you on the trend system, i got one years ago and it seemed like such a good idea but it would take forever and the mechanism seemed to have play in it. I got better results freehand than with that jig.

    Harrogate Show

Agree with you on the hand tools, that’s the main reason I wanted to visit and I felt poor looking at some of the prices! What struck me as odd was the gap in the market: You had the chinesium tools in buckets for £5, vintage tools lucky dip £10-20 (but quite a few needed some serious...

Agreed, I was looking for a precision bit of kit but sadly I found nothing. I was also less than impressed with some drill guides I saw - Micky mouse quality without any angle guides. The ujk one did look good however

I saw this stand and did like the products but it wasn’t really a necessity as you say a nice indulgence

Yeah the floating tenon jig looks good but I feel a dowel joint properly made would give (in real terms) similar strength. Shame that all the jigs I saw today were pocket holes. Perhaps I’ll have to order some metal bushings and make one myself

Yes this was what I was hoping to see in person and try out. Shame there wasn’t anything like it

Agreed it was loose in the demo, but it looked like you could adjust it laterally to make it a tighter fit. Still not worth £250 thought

    Wanted Chair-making books & tools

Thought I’d update this thread after having a chat with Peter wood at the Harrogate show. He recommended against adze or scorp, feeling that they’re very difficult to master for a beginner and pointed me in the direction of a large scooped gouge to rough out. Still need a tool to provide the...

    Harrogate Show

Overall I was a bit disappointed. There’s loads of stuff if you like woodturning and most of the demos are woodturning related. I picked up a couple of second hand gouges from the old tool seller, but I struggled to find what I was after (dowel jig). A lot of the hand tools had no discount...

    Harrogate Show

I’m interested in the chair making demo, I did track down the chap on Facebook and sent him a message asking what day/time it would be happening but never got a reply. Hope I’ll get lucky and he’ll be there this lunchtime. Agreed with you on woodturning demos, I’m indifferent to turning and do...

Thanks for replies. Jfw2708 if you’re considered young in your 50s then I’m not sure what they’d make of me being in my 30s 😂 if anyone sees a young guy with a beard wondering around lost today say hello!

Good tip on the food, I’ll definitely have to pay them a visit tomorrow! How long would you say you could spend at the show? I’ve yet to book my return train tickets

    Rocking crib design

Thanks! And congratulations on the grandchild! :) My crib fits a 120x60cm mattress, and the base goes up and down with a simple chock held with machine bolts. Sides come off for storage / moving, brass screw and the through dowel for strength / alignment. The rocking cot in the video looks...

    Rocking crib design

Hi, Turns out babies grow very quickly and the little man is already growing out of his Moses basket and he’s only 2 months old! I’ve made a full sized crib for his nursery but need something for downstairs and I am considering making a ‘travel size’ or ‘spacesaver’ cot - slightly smaller...

    Wanted Chair-making books & tools

Thanks for the advice! I’m going to the Harrogate show so will try and pick up a scorp if there is one from classichandtools stall etc (hoping for show prices 🤞) EBay seems a bit hit and miss, some jokers putting silly money on rusted up bits of rubbish with chunks missing without handles...

Woodworking & craft shows and events…

Quite interested in going to the Harrogate show - mostly for the demonstrations. Anyone who’s been in the past would you recommend? Thanks

    Wanted Chair-making books & tools

Thanks for the advice all, I always appreciate the wealth of experience from this forum! Definitely not going to be making the chair anytime soon, just looking for some bedtime reading and a starting point to practice the techniques (like getting used to the draw knife and scorp), and...

    Wanted Chair-making books & tools

Hi, I’m after some books on chair making, something suitable for someone new to making a Windsor chair and the following tools Adze or scorp Drawknife Reamer (either entire tool or just blade) Cheers

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Finally finished the crib - just in time as my wife is ready to pop! American cherry for framework and mix of cherry and beech for bars. Can be adjusted to 2 positions and in the top position it can support my body weight so I’m sure it’ll be sturdy enough. Joinery: Bars attached with...
