    WIP jewellery box

Was making great progress until my C26 universal just stopped. I was about to cut the slots to take the corner splines which will act as handles and internal supports (see the first photo). I have made 20 splines from 3.125mm quartersawn oak and ebony laminated together to form a 6.25mm (ie 1/4...

    WIP jewellery box

Quite good progress today and yesterday - I can start to see how it will look now The base layer is now glued up together with the partitions - but the base which is 6mm oak faced MDF can't be glued in yet as a layer of black velvet has to go in before glueing. decided against inlay although the...

    WIP jewellery box

Hi XY thanks for your interest I have just glued together the first layer which went well - the compound angles are almost perfect - not quite but almost! The maths is not too difficult but takes a bit of getting your head round and is laborious. I am happy to reproduce it here but it is VERY...

    WIP jewellery box

Made a bit of progress today Most importantly, I was able to use the 4 mm domino cutter which I just got to align the edges of the sides exactly - although I had to set the depth of the domino at 15mm - which with the new 4 mm cutter means only a 5 mm deep slot - any deeper and it went through...

    WIP jewellery box

thanks Chem all sorted now The bevel box is good - from Axminster currently on offer at £24.94 http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=564900&name=bevel+box&user_search=1&sfile=1&jump=0 It is a bit temperamental in cold weather but seems very accurate and you can zero it from any surface

    WIP jewellery box

Made some progress on saturday morning before we went down to sussex for the weekend... First spent a long time checking and rechecking all the complicated geometry Then decided definitely on the quartersawn oak so cut some of it up, thicknessed, then cut to width with the 75.7 degree angles...

    400 Wood Boxes

Although it does not have plans etc in it is still a very useful resource. I have used quite a few of the photos as inspiration for boxes. The google books website will let you preview quite a few of the pages...

Previous pyramid jewellery box below. It was made as a commission for a friend's wife - I was 'paid' with a new router Main 'walls' are quartersawn ash, top pyramid & base are bubinga, inlays, handles and very top are ebony, and drawer sides and backs are sycamore - the top opened up to be a...

    WIP jewellery box

I have 'lurked' on this forum for a couple of years now without contributing a great deal apart from the odd comment. I have read many interesting and informative articles and threads and been amazed by the standard of some of the posted work. It has been inspiring and I thank all the...

    Waterstones

I will answer first - I know that there will be many more experienced come along soon. However, having struggled for years to get really sharp handtools, I bought the Veritas Mk 2 hining guide on a whim. Suddenly everthing was transformed and seemed ridiculously easy. I use an 800, 1200 and 4000...

    Chopping board finishes??

why wouldn't linseed oil be good enough? it has a lovely smell like cricket bats, and after all we eat linseeds which means it passes the 'i wouldn't want that near my food' test. i have made quite a few of the woodwhisperer-type end grain boards (yew and sycamore was my favourite combination)...

    Best choice for the leigh

I use a 1010 router with my 18 inch Leigh Superjig and it is easily powerful enough - I have never had a problem routing dovetails even in beech, oak, walnut, mahogany or teak

    Router raiser anyone?

I have only just noticed this thread.......... I have a router raizor which I do not need / use anymore. It is in an Axminster white brand 1/2 inch router. I still have all the other bits for it. It works well but I have not used it for a year since getting a CMS table. Anyone is welcome to have...

    Inverted Jigsaw??

I agree with SBJ Festool actually make an insert for the CMS specifically designed to take their jigsaw here - and it works very well - very accurate and it enables me to cut very thin 2mm strips off small pieces - very difficult on my table saw as I can't get / make a zero clearance insert for it

    Festool

I know that Festools are excluded from the Axi 10% offers, but the last 2 times they have had such offers, I have just gone ahead and bought a Festool and then the 10% discount has been applied... so it is worth a try

Why No Planer Thicknesser / Saw Combination machines ?

I would add that my combi has been excellent (Record C26+) over the last 3 years. I have to be honest that only occasionally do I use the spindle moulder, and never the thicknesser as I bought a Makita portable one but the table saw is extremely accurate and the planer also quite excellent (it...

    Fly box

Thanks to both of you for your replies - do you mind if I ask a bit more? Jenx, what is the largest size do you think it could be? And do they generally have mitred corners? or butt joints? or dovetailed? or something else? And from your personal experience, how often does the box get wet as I...
