    Making an upholstered chair

Thank you both of you for your replies. Ironballs I take your point about me being a rank amateur but I like a challenge and as I say I have done some upholstery before and understand the principles. If I **** it up I will not have ruined the frame so it would be salvageable by an expert. Allan...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Thanks all of you for your nice comments - the 2 big mistakes I made in this mirror (there were lots of smaller ones) were huge and could easily have led to abandonment of the whole piece. I remember (can't recall where) someone saying that your skill as a woodworker was about how good you are...

    Making an upholstered chair

I wonder if anyone can help me? I want to make a rocking chair with a padded - ie upholstered seat. It needs to be quite small - the upholstered bit would need to be about 22" square. Can anyone point me in a good direction? I have some experience of upholstery having recently re-sprung and...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Finally finished today and it has been a very long haul. Usually I am a bit sad at the end of a project as I enjoy the whole process so much - this time I felt relieved as there had been so many problems. Anyway here it is finished (and now delivered to the client).

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

So after a long struggle and being generally quite 'down' for the last couple of days about having c****d up this mirror I spent another 3 hours late last night and I think it is going to be OK. Cleaned up the 2 sides of the stand with a compnation of curved & straight chisels, scraper, sanders...

    Breathing dust

I have to be honest and share the scepticism of one or two of you about this tale.... whilst I agree with all the stuff about dust protection and minimizing exposure etc etc - if this story were to be true there would be far more fatalaties from dust-related illnesses. After all who here hasn't...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

I spent 2 hours after work last night and might have got things back on track - not certain yet though First for the mirror itself I took another mm or 2 off the side where the 'dink' was and then planed / sanded / scraped until the dink had virtually gone. So here is the frame. which is almost...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Thank you both for your words of consolation. Sportique I would love to see a photo of your shop-made knobs as this is one thing (assuming the mirror is salvageable) that I have not firmly decided on - and I can't find any decent hardware such as thumbb-bolts or similar to use... At the momenet...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Very bad day in the shed... not sure if this mirror is salvageable - too cross to speak much last night - feel a little bit better today Thumb-moulding cutter arrived yesterday from Wealdens - so prompt and such good service. I eagerly went out at 7pm after work to cut the curved profiles on...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Rob my humble apologies - I mis-recollected the comments of Mr Maskery as your own - he tapped a thread in some bubinga for the mounts of a very beautiful oval cheval mirror he made recently Inlay around mirror finished today - awaiting thumb moulder cutter to get the whole thing finished...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

Got the frame finished over the weekend - 2" ash board which helpfully had a curve in the grain so the curved side has grain 'parallel' all the way along most of it. Curved top and bottom too. Decided on rabbit joints for the 4 corners which I cut roughly with a bandsaw then finished off the...

    Saw doctor or new blade?

So following Brad's earlier advice, this morning I cycled down to Thames Valley Saw Service in Drayton, Abingdon 'on the way' to work (actually a 15 mile detour!) and I chatted to Dave who booked my saw blade in and said he would drop it back to me - very helpful. Then I found out that Oxon...

    Ash / ebony Cheval mirror

The brief was for a traditional cheval mirror with some modern touches. So I thought I would continue my ash/ebony line which has had favourable reception previously. I looked very hard at Steve Maskery's beautiful oval Cheval mirror in bubinga as I thought an oval mirror would be great. I have...

    Saw doctor or new blade?

The saw blade I am talking about is this one http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-CMT-Ultra-ITK-Thin-Kerf-Compound-Mitre-and-Fine-Finish-Blades-781522.htm - the 250mm blade item number 300104 which retails on the Axi site at GBP74 and has a 1.7mm kerf. It holds its edge for a long time (unless...

    Saw doctor or new blade?

I quite often use a CMT 80 tooth fine finish thin kerf blade on my table saw. It gives a beautiful finish. It has been sharpened once before but I am ashamed and embarrassed to say that unfortunately dropped it and 4 teeth have broken.... I do not know of a saw doctor near to me in oxford - so I...

    Ash / walnut coffee table

Thanks again for all your kind words Paul - I thicknessed some oak to 11mm, then joined 2 boards then cut the oval out using the string / pins method - cut round with a bandsaw then finshed with a belt sander. Then I went over it very carefully through all the grades, finishing with a card...

Cheval mirror hardware / swivels / mounts

Steve yes I think there is a Gasman Steve too so no worries. I was going to make mine oval too - in fact I had seen yours previously and thought what a lovely piece. I was a bit unsure how the grain would turn out - especially which direction one would have the grain going in - did you join...
