    Backgammon / chess table

Today I had another day's holiday so I got quite a bit done Started making the chess board - and after due consideration and discussion decided on yew/sycamore so cut up strips of 45mm of each then glued up then cut 45mm strips again then glued up again before finally glueing to 15mm MDF. Still...

    Backgammon / chess table

So I made a start…. My wife absolutely loved JasonB’s beautiful chess table http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Chess%20Table/ so with apologies to you Jason (imitation obviously being the sincerest form of flattery!), the design is similar, although it will be a drum table and...

    Backgammon / chess table

The silence is deafening! It looks like the search engine on this site is right - no one has done it before. However, having seen JasonB's beautiful chess table which he detailed here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Chess%20Table/, I will probably do something similar except...

    Backgammon / chess table

Earlier this year I made a 4 foot diameter drum table https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/victorian-drum-table-t48027.html and want to make a smaller version, but with a reversible chess / backgammon board set into the top. I did want it to be swivelling, with a drawer to keep the pieces but...

    Domino

ONe more idea - I always use the tightest fitting but I always make 2 passes - and that 'loosens ' the joint a very small fraction to allow them to fit better )earlier anyway) Mark

Help with tongue and grooving planks please

Thanks both of you for your comments I like the idea of half lap joints - hadn't thought of that Cheers Mark

Do you know where your first aid kit is?

Superglue is such good treatment for small cuts etc - even quite large (non-arterial!) bleeds can be stopped with elevation, pressure and judiciously applied superglue - I always keep some of the super thin stuff (which I also mix up with sawdust to fill knots etc. I agree the 'plastic skin'...

Help with tongue and grooving planks please

I am making a heavy duty garden gate in idigbo - it is about 6' x 3' and needs to be 'solid' - i.e. no gaps that you can see through The frame is 4"x2" or thereabouts - with big rabbeted corner joints which will be doweled as well I want to use 6" x 1/2" planks to make up the 'middle' of the...

Where did all those wow moments go?

My last one was this last Saturday at the Milton Keynes Bowl with 70 000 other Foofighters fans listening to Dave Grohl play an acoustic version of 'Times Like These' as the second song of a 6 song encore - they played for over 2 and a half hours and it was unforgettable - a real 'wow' moment!

    Tallboy - now finished

Thanks for the replies all of you. I find this site so inspirational from all the helpful comments. I was hoping that Woodbloke would come by at some stage and tell me why he has such an aversion to walnut where there's sapwood mixed with heartwood?? I used this for the 4 long curved legs - but...

    Tallboy - now finished

Just finished waxing the drawer sides and I am overall pleased. Perhaps a bit similar to the original but it will work well where we want to put it Finish in the end was sanding sealer, 2 coats hardwaxoil and 2 layers of Briwax Thanks for looking and for all the helpful comments Mark

Thanks so much for the nice comments Handles done tonight.... In the same geometric progression as the heights of the door - so 44 - 39 - 35 - 31.2 - 27.7 - 24.9 - 22 mm Rough cut out walnut circles on a bandsaw then turned the basic shape to within 1 mm then sanded from 80 - 120 - 180 to 320 G...

Yes you sort of push the work towards the router bit - with the fence set up so it is the correct depth. YOu obviously have to be careful as the bit is pulling it left all the time - but if you 'anchor' one end against the fence and then use that to stabilize it works quite well. I use the...

    Tallboy - now finished

More good progress today after an early work finish Yesterday I had glued up the last of the drawers So today I spent a good couple of hours tidying all the drawers up - removing surplus glue, sanding to 120G all over, making them fit really well until I had a stack of 7 drawers all looking...

Made some progress this week - with the drawers, although purists out there will turn away in disgust as I have made the full through dovetails of the rear of the drawers on an 18" Leigh Superjig - here is one dry fitted for size - it does go together correctly when clamped - I know it looks as...

    Puzzle Chest Critique Please

I think it is amazing - I love the concept of multiple secret boxes drawers and compartments - something I try to put into each jewellery box I make but I agree with some of the other comments about the difficulty in transcribing this concept into a money-spinning business venture How long did...

    Tallboy - now finished

Progress remains slow However I have decided to make the drawer fronts out of ash with the drawer sides and back made out of walnut to save on wood (I know that sounds funny but I have lots of walnut boards rough sawn from an old tree so they will be a mixture of sap and heart wood, cut 10mm...

    Tips and Wrinkles

I love that one Flounder! How about these 2: 1. If you make a mistake / are having a bad day / have an apparently insoluble problem - then leave the shed for a while go and do something else. Most of the problem solving I come up with happens out of the workshop 2. Keep superglue to hand - it is...
