Scotland NHS ban Desflurane Anesthetic….why should you care? You should.

Interesting subject. I've been an anaesthetist for more than 30 years - I am just about to retire from the NHS. I have used pretty much all the available anaesthetic agents from tricholoethylene to desflurane. I havent used xenon which is the cleanest drug but is by far the most expensive...

Incised letter carving, question about depth of cut

I do this quite a lot. How deep the trench is obviously depends on the font size. I have found the easiest way is to print out the actual letters on labels - then stick that to the wood then cut through the label into the wood. I use a couple of chisels with 25 degree bevels, a scalpel with 11...

Sowing the First Seeds of 2023

We also had the chafer grub infestation. Lost 50% of our lawn - totally dead and the grass came up like an old carpet. Hired a 4m skip, got 3 toms of topsoil delivered, treated with nematodes and resowed just in time for the winter - it looks quite good now

    Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

I'm a vascular anaesthetist in Oxford. I anaesthetise patients for both procedures most weeks and have done for 25 years. Endovascular repair quickly became popular because the early (30 day hospital mortality) is lower but that survival benefit declines as the years go on and if you survive a...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Yes I am and can always add it as an afterthought but there are 4 full width (80mm) mortice and tenon joints on each side and it seems super-robust to me

Cleaning old dirty brass clock movement

Yes but he would have to promise to cry when they reveal the item to him. Close up camera 1 we got tears coming.... sorry to be cynical but it's a bit saccharine for me!

    Queen Elizabeth has passed away.

...so now you're arguing with me when I have expressed an opinion. Thats hysterical. Is this a 5 minute argument or the full half hour?

    Queen Elizabeth has passed away.

Sometimes it makes me sad logging into this forum. Whatever the subject there are always people who turn it into a slanging match. The whole world has become more polarised. It is sad I think

Ladders against gutters... And what to do when getting onto a roof ladder?

I'm an anaesthetist - hence Gasman - and used to do alot of trauma anaesthesia. The best 'elfin safety' story I ever heard was a guy who had fallen backwards off his ladder whilst cutting a tall hedge, breaking a couple of vertebrae and one hip. He was holding a flymo mower by the sides of the...

    Restoring 18C longcase clock case

That looks a beautiful clock. If you sand it etc etc I think you will ruin it. It won't need very much. Maybe fix any loose veneers but patching a veneered piece is an astonished time-consuming job to match the grain then stain it to the same shade then finish. Just not worthwhile in my opinion...

    A Question for Letter-Carvers.....

I do lettering quite often and just use printer labels. The adhesive comes off quite easily after you have cut through with a scalpel I find Rare to have to use an adhesive remover I find

Thank you - the front boards are laminated, the sides are curved solid pieces hollowed out. It made fitting the hinges a bit of a challenge as there was no reference face to work off. I can only find a photo of the drawers out before the baize lining and hinges were fitted
