    Walnut dining table

Thanks Custard I was going to do pretty much as you say - but using Van **** crystals. I have a solution mixed up which is not too dark and several coats of that over the sapwood and then 2 or 2 over the whole thing followed by osmo hardwaxoil as it needs to be very resistant. Thanks again Mark

    Walnut dining table

Thanks guys. Andy your reply made me laugh The boards really are beautiful but it has that perennial problem that English walnut has of what to do about sapwood. The 6 boards I used for the top were the best, out of the 16 in total, in terms of straight and flat and also with the most heartwood...

    Walnut dining table

It has taken a while but have now finally got round to starting this table. The wood was actually very dry at 8-9% I tried to grain match as much as possible. Jointed 6 boards with 50x10mm dominos to form the top Its ended up a nice slab. For the rails I decided upon a sliding dovetail...

    Walnut dining table

Thanks gents for your considered opinions. I agree with almost all the points. One important point is that this table is going in my dining room not a clients'. I would not make a table to this design for a client. So I can make changes to it as necessary - even rebuild it if required. I will...

    Walnut dining table

Thanks Steve - yes good point and I already thought I will make the 2 pieces asymmetric so that the gap is central at each end

    Walnut dining table

A bit of sketchup later and I'm getting happier with the design... Here's the finished article: Underneath there is a midline stretcher as suggested The rails joining the legs together are made in 2 pieces, joined together by 4 screws in a slot to allow some movement. The stretcher is attached...

    Walnut dining table

Thans Pete I asked the designer about the construction and he replied in a very nice post to me 'the table is designed in such a way as to allow the top to expand and contract across the grain with the seasons. We are hesitant to divulge our engineering details as we have had problems in the...

    Walnut dining table

Thanks again gents - all very interesting. Theres yet another photo which is interesting in the press section of the website of a slightly different table which shows the rail appears to be in pieces as suggested I wonder whether the 3 plugs visible - one above each leg and 2 through the leg...

    Walnut dining table

Thanks guys I absolutely love this forum - such a plethora of wise and interesting opinions and advice - and so quickly answered. I'm going to have a play around with sketchup over the next few days. I do think it is solid wood - the website talks about all the wood being salvaged I will have a...

Best way to inlay strips into an Oak panel?

Lots of ways of doing this - buy maybe the easiest is to make a frame out of MDF - 2 long pieces 1000mm x 60, plus 2 pieces 100 x 50mm. Take some time to make sure the edges are all square and parallel. Then glue them together and clamp so that you have a frame with a 800x50mm hole in the middle...

Infill Mitre Plane Build (amateur hour), Help?

Mmmmm that is so interesting. Many congratulations on taking on this job. I understand all too well how tricky these things are to start from scratch. I am in the 'middle' of a similar job though mine was a lump of gunmetal to which I am trying to sweat a steel sole on. When I say middle, I have...

    Long MDF/MRMDF

I have successfully joined MRMDF just end to end with PU glue. You obviously have to line it up perfectly and ensure the 2 ends are completely square but it is amazingly strong Depends on how much load will be on it I imagine? Regards Mark

    Yet another casting infill plane.....

A couple of productive hours on saturday morning I finally managed to do the tinning. It was Pete's comment that made it work in my head I think when he said that I should get some thicker diameter solder and that it would take quite a bit to do it - so I realised it would be quite a thick...

    Yet another casting infill plane.....

The weekend was frustrating and I would love some advice about how to proceed... I milled out the mouth of the bronze then cleaned up the corners with files - all good Then cut the base down to size Decided to round the back corners of the sole - I can always change this a bit once it is...
