Looking for brass or bronze carriage bolts & nuts...

I plan to make saw nuts from them. I have a metal lathe and a mill, so, and plan to turn the nuts round, then cut a slot in them. I can't abide paying $7 to $13 each for them, as I recently posted in my "Recent restorations & repairs on a few Backsaws..." post...

Looking for brass or bronze carriage bolts & nuts...

Hello Brothers, I am looking for a source to purchase brass or bronze carriage bolts & nuts... 3/16" (#10) x 1" with machine nuts. I have tried eBay, Amazon, McMaster-Carr, Fastenall, etc. with no luck. Any ideas?

A quick tip for sanding in tightly curved spots...

I am going to try cardboard tubes. Good idea as well!

Go for it! Find a properly-sized screwdriver/turnscrew and apply firm steady pressure. I dedicated several screwdrivers for use on split-nuts by grinding a slot in the center. A good fit in the screw slot is key. Most of my better screwdrivers are hardened. The slot can be ground with a...

A quick tip for sanding in tightly curved spots...

All good ideas above! :) The transfer punch set is perhaps the best idea as they are probably cheaper than a set of drill blanks, and will do double-duty as originally intended. I happen to have a set of drill blanks since I have a machine shop, but truly, I may switch to using my transfer...

A quick tip for sanding in tightly curved spots...

A drill blank set when wrapped with sandpaper is very handy for sanding in tightly curved areas. You then have a set of sanding "sticks" (or rods) in all sizes from 1/8" to 1/2". Works very well with regular or stick-on adhesive sandpaper. Give it a try.

Recent restorations & repairs on a few Backsaws...

Richard Groves and Sons backsaw with a broken horn on a beech handle: The horn ended-up looking more like a plane tote than a saw handle, but I learned from it! Nevertheless, it is very comfortable in the hand. After use, I can see why these saws are well-regarded: Tyzack Sons &...

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Yes, likely it is an older bottle of oil. There was no expiration date on it. Amazon has oft been criticized for selling outdated products... one of the reasons they are sometimes cheaper. "Unlucky" is perhaps not the correct term... My first bottle of Camellia oil was packaged exactly like...

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Hello Isaac, Thanks for the reply. I paid $37 US for it, with free shipping. I will no longer be using it. I wish it were cheaper to ship to the UK (I have family there); I would send it to you gratis. Perhaps I will try wiping it off after application, but that does not relieve the...

Drawers - how do you rabbet yours?

I use slips on all my good furniture. There was an article in FWW magazine years ago comparing many of the different types. This is easily the best article I have seen in forty years. Here is a copy of the *.pdf file. Once you use slips, you will not go back!

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Is "Liquid Paraffin" the same product as conventional "Mineral Oil"? I have found the latter to be rather viscous. I suspect your recommended Liquid Paraffin is more like the Kerosene we use for lamps on this side of the pond (and yes, I still use them on occasion, especially when we have...

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Hello sams93. As suggested by you, themack, and bingy man, I am eager to try ACF-50 (I wish it were less expensive!). But apparently, it also may gum-up on my oil can (according to the YouTube videos I have watched, it may gum-up if applied liberally). How do you get around that? You do...

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Hello Sideways, Thanks for your reply. Addendum: mine is not "water-thin". It is more like a light cooking oil. It certainly has some body to it.*** If memory serves, I purchased a small spray bottle of Camellia Oil from one of the larger woodworking tool outlets years ago that was...

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Thanks for the tip. I was doing a little research and found that some of these anti-rust products contain PTEF. Have you found any problems with "orange-peel" effect on finishes like one may get with silicone products? I do not know if PTEF causes the same issues.

RUST Prevention on TOOLS- I am giving up on Camellia Oil...

Hello Brothers, I have read so many positive comments on the use of camellia oil for rust prevention that I bought a big (huge) bottle of it... only to be sorely disappointed! :((n)(n)(n) I am going back to using paste wax! The problem that I have found with camellia oil is that it...
