Why you need a well cambered blade on a No7

Yes, Derek, exactly correct! That is what I would also do. Assuming however, that he piece of plywood would fit on your bench. On the topic of cambering a jointer plane blade: yes and no. I am fortunate enough to have several jointer planes. I camber the blade on one, and the other I...

    CBN wheels.

I have a 6 inch full-speed (3450 RPM) grinder with two CBN Wheels (80 and 320 grit). If I had it to do over, I might buy a finer wheel for the opposite side, as the 320 Grit is still quite coarse. The 80 grit wheel removes metal amazingly quickly and cooly. I have mated it to a OneWay /...

To buy old saws or new? Is the question.

Like most of my Brothers above, I have restored quite a few vintage hand saws, and use them regularly. They are enticing for multiple reasons. They are often more comfortable in the hand, have better balance, and are generally more visually appealing. Not to mention that you will perhaps be...

    Spiers plane question

I read somewhere (I cannot find the reference now), that you can place the plane on a piece of plate glass, preferably "float glass", without the blade inserted. I use a piece of 1/4 inch glass from a broken shelf. Then, carefully mount the blade so that it now sits flush with the bottom of...

    Prestons Plane find

I have done a lot of what we (in the USA) call "dumpster-diving"... I fail to understand why people get upset when we engage in pulling things out... The more we remove, the less they have to pay to dump/trash (by weight)! :ROFLMAO: (The main reason, I suspect, is the LIABILITY... if you get...

Buck & Hickman, Whitechapel "W" Marking Gauge restoration/modification...

I have always thought that it was placed there during the process of cutting the threads. Perhaps to drive it through the thread-cutting box? I really do not know, but have always been very curious. Most of the older ones I have in my collection have this notch. I bought two pallet-loads...

Buck & Hickman, Whitechapel "W" Marking Gauge restoration/modification...

Greetings Brothers, I have a Buck & Hickman, Whitechapel, "W" Marking Gauge with a worn stock. The stock and stem are made of beech, but the thumbscrew appears to be made from Lignum Vitae or a rosewood (?). I prefer slitting gauges, so I modified this one and added "golden" cocobolo to...

Exotic wood rabbet plane. Lignum vitae?

I finally decided to add a new sole to the rabbet plane. I have a lot of cocobolo, mostly sapwood, or as I prefer to call it "golden cocobolo". ;) Perhaps not handsome, but works better now. The cocobolo is very dense and slippery. Makes a good sole.

A simpler method of repairing broken saw nut screws!

Hello again Brothers, Whilst out in the shop yesterday, I was working on the restoration of a well-used "Jackson"/Disston carcase saw. One of the screws was snapped-off at the post, and the split-nut was MIA (missing). Note the plate has been filed many times; there is a curvature near the...

Exotic wood rabbet plane. Lignum vitae?

In the USA, we do not have very many truly dense woods, unless you buy exotics. I was amazed by how dense & heavy this wood is. It takes a wonderful luster with sanding. I appreciate the help identifying it. I have several maritime planes that I bought in "New England" (mostly in Maine)...

Exotic wood rabbet plane. Lignum vitae?

Yes, it seems to fit. I looked it up on: https://www.wood-database.com/greenheart/ Thanks!

Exotic wood rabbet plane. Lignum vitae?

I may have to add a new sole on the plane, to close-up the mouth a bit. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what type of wood this is?

Exotic wood rabbet plane. Lignum vitae?

Here is a craftsman-made rabbet plane that I recently cleaned-up & tuned. I wish I had a "before" picture, as it was quite weathered. It is made of some type of very heavy exotic wood I (Lignum Vitae? A dense Mahogany?) with what appears to be a boxwood wedge. In any case, I had to do a lot...

On the topic of split-nut Turnscrews...

Here is a picture of some of my split-nut turnscrews. The one on the left I fabricated from a very wide screwdriver, and is my favorite (but decidedly UGLY!). The others I obtained from various UK auctions. Sometimes they come in handy, especially for smaller split-nuts. The gullet is far...

Abused Board of Education Disston Dovetail Saw restoration...

Here is a rather abused "Board of Education" (ex-school property) Disston Dovetail Saw that I restored recently. I am amazed that such abuse is permitted in schools! BTW, if you are like me, you prefer pictures over "talk". I will try to follow that principle. Note the multiple splits...

    TYZACK Backsaw Heresy?

Addendum: I found this example of a Buck & Ryan backsaw in my saved saw image files. I do not know if the saw plate is original to the saw. Any thoughts?

Hand Saw Restoration and Re-teething of a 99p saw Completed

Perhaps this is a good place to start looking, although deema certainly (IMO) appears to be very well-versed on the topic of saw restoration: *** http://disstonianinstitute.com/backsawpage.html

Looking for brass or bronze carriage bolts & nuts...

Yes, good point. I really do not know if simply buying a brass rod is more economical(?). I have a fair amount of it on hand, that I purchased at auctions, yard sales (tag sales on you side of the pond?), and the like. I will do that if it is required for a proper fit, but I find turning...

Recent restorations & repairs on a few Backsaws...

Ollie, You are going to be so pleased with the result of your efforts. I have restored quite a few, and I can see that one will turn out very nicely! Read through the excellent post from deema (above-linked). He has outlined the "how to" and clearly has a thorough understanding of saw...
