    Korean Chest of Drawers

It would have to be a species that arrived quickly in the UK after the ice age, and furthermore it would have to be a species that grew in the low lying areas that were swampy enough to capture the fallen trees in oxygen free conditions and preserve it. So that means East Angla or the West Coast...

    Korean Chest of Drawers

Hamish Low is the premier expert on Bog Oak, he's the guy who finally figured out how to kiln it and through his network of East Anglian farmers has dug up and processed many tons of Bog Oak. I know he believes (and who am I to disagree!) that properly dried Bog Oak is harder and denser than...

    A bed for my son

I agree with Keith. That's an incredibly heavy design, and having a solid platform where the mattress sits won't allow the mattress to breathe, plus there is so much timber in it that it will cost a lot just in raw materials. It's a great idea to make furniture for your kids, but I think there...

This auction might be of interest.

I'm so sorry to hear this. If it's any consolation there seems to be a shockwave running through the furniture and custom joinery businesses right now, so unfortunately you're certainly not alone. I heard last week that Cimitree has just gone bankrupt. They were a business that I had a lot of...

    Korean Chest of Drawers

I don't want to divert from Woodbloke's excellent drawer chest, so I'll keep this brief. Brown Oak is regular Oak that had a fungal attack, it's on the road to becoming spalted so all Brown oak is punky to some degree. The problem with overly thick veneer is that the side that's glued down to...

    Plum wood.

It is definitely worth drying and furthermore it is worth aiming for the widest boards you can manage together with a couple of thicker boards that will yield rift sawn leg components. Examples of smaller items of antique furniture that have been made from Plum command a substantial premium...

    Korean Chest of Drawers

I hope I didn't suggest that 0.7mm was the limit. There's a fairly broad group that regards 1/16" or 1.6mm as an upper limit for saw cut hardwood veneers on man made substrates. I've also discussed this with the guy who, when he was chief craftsman for John Makepeace at Parnham, ran some...

    Korean Chest of Drawers

I like the way the inset drawers match the reveal on the panels, it really unifies the whole piece. Great choice of timbers by the way, and the drawer pulls look terrific. Smashing job! =D>

    CBN wheels

A question for Katellwood, did you need to have the CBN wheels balanced or centred on your grinder?

    Paring chisels suggestions

Many woodworkers will need a long paring chisel at some time. Unless you're a pattern maker you won't need more than one or two, but sometimes that extra long blade is just what a job requires. Personally I'll often use "paring blocks" ie pieces of scrap wood cut at a particular angle as an...

    Small yew Bowl

The nice thing about using Yew, is that whatever you make it'll just keep looking better every year for the next two hundred years. Because absolutely nothing else patinates quite as beautifully as Yew!

    True poor man bench.

There are no rules, but if you were lucky enough to train as a cabinet maker at the Edward Barnsley workshops you might spend three years working at a 38" high bench. For the first six months you'd use nothing but hand tools, so you'd use that same bench to dimension lots of hardwood boards...

Where can I find cheap 18mm plywood

There's cheap ply and there's good quality ply...but there's no such thing as cheap, good quality ply. Here's a useful guide to the plywood grading system, https://www.trada.co.uk/media/3819/birc ... 013_lr.pdf For clear finishes on furniture quality projects you really need S+/BB or B/BB...

What is this engineered wood called?

Laminboard. Light, stable, and takes fastenings well. There's a German version that's popular with some makers as a veneering substrate.

    Cup of tea anyone?

Superb work...and a truly gorgeous piece of timber!

help on how to remove rustins plastic coat

I'd contact Rustins direct and ask their advice. It's pretty bullet proof as finishes go, so I suspect you'll have to abrade it away, but Rustins may have a little wrinkle up their sleeves. Just as important, they'll be able to advise so you don't encounter the same problem next time around!

Building a wooden cart, how to choose the correct wood?

West London try Moss & Co, not the cheapest but consistently superb quality, https://www.mosstimber.co.uk For mid market quality and mid market prices try SL Hardwoods, https://www.slhardwoods.co.uk

Cloudy white finish on Lacquered box, how to remove please?

There's a slightly lower risk version of Richard's approach which is sometimes used for smaller or for very valuable pieces. You make a simple tent from poly sheets and inside have some scrunched up cotton wool that's been dipped in meths. Take care that the meths can not, under any...
