    Cascamite WBP

I agree that Aerolite One Shot is an excellent product. However, it's just not practical for most hobbyist woodworkers. The minimum quantity is something like 3Kg, so pretty much a lifetime's supply for many people, but Aerolite will only endorse a shelf life of 6 months. This is one of the key...

Found Inca Euro 205 Bandsaw SORTED

I'm looking for one of the small, table top Inca bandsaws in decent, "user" condition. I can collect in Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex, London, Home Counties.

Help please Axminster Trade Series ST-480 Bench Mounted Drum/Brush Sander 230v

Axminster may have stopped selling it, but is it actually discontinued? The ST-480 is a re-badged version of Laguna's Supermax 19-38, which as far as I can tell is still being sold, https://supermaxtools.com/products/wood/19-38-drum-sander-71938-d/ Incidentally, I really hate sounding like a...

Help please Axminster Trade Series ST-480 Bench Mounted Drum/Brush Sander 230v

It's like the old banger that's for sale, where the value doubles if the tank's full of petrol. A roll of sandpaper for this machine now costs virtually £100, which gives about ten or twelve loadings. Most of these machines that crop up for sale come with a few full rolls. At this sort of...

    Ultex vs Trend Diamond stones

I did a little review of Ultex a few years ago, https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/ultex-diamond-stones.100153/ Maybe not the highest quality diamond stones, but the price is only a small fraction of some others.

How much work can a 1/2" router actually do before you need to invest in spindle moulder

Yes, should be fine. You may want to touch up the edge of your bits a few times during the job, one of those credit card sized diamond hones would be ideal.

How much work can a 1/2" router actually do before you need to invest in spindle moulder

That's well within the capacity of a decent router. The spindle moulder would have the advantage if it had a power feed, but without a power feed it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Help please Axminster Trade Series ST-480 Bench Mounted Drum/Brush Sander 230v

I bought an ST-480 drum sander from Axminster in April 2015, I've just found the receipt. I got the basic sander, ie without the wire brush attachment. I paid £1549.96 inc VAT, I also bought the cabinet/stand, which was an additional £359.95 inc VAT.

A spalting chance? Ash staining. Any ideas?

Hello Chris, you get this brown colouration quite often with Ash, my guess is that it's Olive Ash. It's generally a little more pronounced than on your example. Like Pippy Oak, it drifts in and out of fashion. Currently, well figured boards of Olive Ash can command a premium.

    Drill Press / Mortiser Combo

I agree with Myfordman. A morticing attachment in a drill press will have you tearing your hair out, the hold down facility isn't really strong enough so the workpiece tends to lift up as the chisel is raised. Even worse is that the bearings on a drill press aren't designed for the serious...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Carrying on with showing how I made the formers for Shaker Oval Boxes. The next step is to temporarily attach the master template to one of the three rough cut, softwood ovals. Here it's being screwed in place while ensuring there's an overhang on the softwood oval all the way around. The...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A few years ago I had a commission to make the tables for a restaurant. Chatting to the owner I floated the idea of using Shaker style oval boxes as bread baskets. The owner was interested, so in the great tradition of custom furniture makers I pulled a quote and a delivery date out of thin air...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That looks a very tidy job. Most first attempts that I've seen are pretty gappy where the top band wraps around the top, where as yours looks really clean. Well done! 👏 I believe that the great majority of original Shaker boxes had the bands running the other way round. In other words the...

    Vono Vice

Few things illustrate "horses for courses" better than vices. When they're designed to do a particular job...and that's the job that you happen to be doing...then all is well with the world. But when you're not working in harmony with your vice, then the workshop becomes a fractious and...

    What goes with lacewood

Hello marcros. I can see why Lacewood would work well for the top and the drawer front, because you want a bit of drama in those components. But Lacewood for the legs and undercarriage? That might be a mistake. As you know Lacewood isn't actually a species, it's a cut, specifically the...

    woodwork supplier

I mainly use "Smart" hinges for boxes (it's usually either Smart hinges or Brusso). They're very good. The problem comes with consistency of supply, which is unfortunately very hit and miss. Plus the situation gets even worse when you factor in the other items in the range such as locks, these...

    How much?

Most furniture makers tend to charge out basic letter carving of these dimensions at around £4-6 per character. That's for hand work, anyone using CNC (including most stone masons and wooden sign makers) charges out at half this price or less. Full time carvers are incredibly quick at lettering...

    How Close To Edge?

Thank you all, some very good points. The key take out is that I was wrong to try and get as close to the edges as possible, and coming in a bit more really isn't a problem. Thanks,
