Pre-veneered board - MDF or ply?

You mean 38 mm for the vertical components. ? It would be impossibly heavy for shelving. Of course with shelving you only need to stiffen the front and back edges and I've done this by milling a 40 mm batten with a 16 mm dado to take the panelboard. It works fine and the only hassle is matching...

    Table Saw Power Questions

Certainly if you limit cuts to about 3" hardwood and sheet goods then 1.75 HP is plenty. You can always flip thick boards over and do two cuts. I'd also look for a sliding table arrangement - crosscut sleds are all very well but not as efficient as a sliding table. My only quibble with the...

    Table Saw Power Questions

I have a little experience in this area as I imported a DeWalt 746 from the US about 20 years ago. I wanted to use a dado blade and DeWalt offered a dual voltage option. The Americans/Canadians have a different attitude to Europeans - they regard the tablesaw as a multifunction tool. I now have...

Which Planer/thicknesser is the best for Startup?

A P/T is the bedrock of any workshop. You may plane one board by hand but how enthusiastic will you be tackling a few cubic feet. ? If starting out I would recommend a secondhand Scheppach HM260 , sadly no longer made. It has rubber rollers enabling you to thickness down to 3mm or so. If funds...

    Office worktop build

I sometimes use cheap flush doors for thick shelving like this. You can actually cut into them exposing the 'eggbox' interior as long as you glue in a batten to support the two outer leaves. Finishing can be anything you like so its a Marmite solution. That outer corner will need support no...

Domino Jointers Are they really worth it, or just a gimic

Conventional biscuits and dominoes need one extra tool - a sash clamp. Of course k/d festool products are available but they leave a hole in the horizontal component to be covered. I'm drawn to the Lamello Tenso clips which will allow butt and mitred joints to simply clip together. Great for...

    Corded Or Cordless

For tools fixed in one spot I'd buy corded all the time. Batteries are going to fail and they ain't cheap. For mobile tools like a trim router there is a good argument for cordless but have a backup in place. They always seem to fail when you are starting a project o_O

    Hot glue? Or wood filler?

Would the glue not soften when sanding. ? The Liberon lacquer sticks are excellent for filling small cracks - they run into the defect by a kind of osmosis.

    Concealed hinge installation

You can easily reverse the mistake - buy a 35 mm plug cutter - they are only about £20 and glue in the plugs. Then you can sleep easily at night.:giggle:

    scheppach Planer

I have the HMO 260 planer/thicknesser and had the same problem as you. You are getting 'snipe' and it's almost always due to the blades being set too high. The conventional advice is to set the blades so they move a lath on the outfeed table back by 6 mm when you rotate the block. This will...

    Tack cloths/rags?

LOL. I remember Andrew Crawford ( the boxmaker ) saying he creeps into his workshop in the morning to French polish his boxes. Cover your workpiece and wait for the dust to settle. All finishing demands a clean workshop and discipline. I'm considering getting one of those 'pop up' tent covers...

    Tack cloths/rags?

I have a separator in the line for oil and never had any problems. You could wipe down with a panel wipe product to remove any possible trace of oil after dusting. Its very gratifying to see the dust blow out of the actual grain of the wood. !

    Tack cloths/rags?

I gave up on them a long time ago - why risk spoiling the finish on your masterpiece.? Compressed air is far better.

Span between brackets for birch ply shelf

Is Baltic ply available in 24 mm or will you laminate 18 +6 mm ? It will be heavy !

    Box joint router bits

I have the Incra jig but use it on the table saw as I can fit flat ground blades. It is unique in that you can adjust the fitting of the box joints. If you want the very best fit possible then make the joints tight as there is nothing worse than hairline gaps. I have no experience of the router...

    Elliptical basswood or Mdf louvre

You can order all Rockler products directly from them but of course you will take a hit on customs and vat. Failing that you can use a shipping agent like www.shipito.com but charges are steep. Try and keep the package under 4 pounds and then you can use the USPS Airmail Economy rate which is...

    Milwaukee

Makita make a special range of tools just for the Japanese market..They are maroon coloured rather than the standard Makita blue. Shame its just not economical to order from Japan.

    Mitre saw

A 12" mitre saw is so much more versatile as you can cut a lot of mitres vertically. I have a sliding Milwaukee but it has to stick out about 50 cm from the wall and I still can't get behind it to tidy up. Next time I would make a free standing saw bench with 360 degree access.

    Help with making driveway gates

Iroko is a good choice assuming you can machine it. Time to invest in a Festool Domino XL ?

Plywood desk - what about the edges?

Ha Ha, well, I don't live in the Far East but have to rely on what I find locally. I can find only two types of ply, the pink Luan veneered type and Baltic Birch ply. The Luan ply from the High St retailers is absolute rubbish being warped and full of voids. I would rather use OSB board to be...
