Dewalt Radial Arm Saw DW 720

The 720 has one advantage - it will crosscut up to 600 mm so great for panel boards etc. They are a beggar to set up and should be left alone if cutting accurate right angles. DeWalt used to market a premium dado blade but it will not fit the 720 - EU regulations - remember them. :rolleyes...

    Wood identification

I'd agree it's oak. Very popular in the 1930's when they stained everything. !

Travelling to the US - what would you buy

They only sell it up to 24" in length so a wheeled suitcase would be fine. I'd have to stop myself packing it full though.

Travelling to the US - what would you buy

As a boxmaker I'd visit one of the Rockler stores and buy some pre- planed wood. Rosewood, bubinga and curly maple etc are all available in 1/2" thickness. Getting it home is another question of course .

    What wood for shaker doors?

Assuming you have the tools to prepare rough wood then Poplar is top of the list. Light, strong and easy to mill it has virtually no grain so is ideal for painting.

How do you know you're getting old...

When your grandchildren ask what devices you had growing up. I still remember the advent of 'stereo' with excitement. :D

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

I use Ney Panel Wipe for all stains and it works a treat. Nice citrus smell and it cleans up sticky tape residue as well.

Longer open time than Everbuild 502

Not quite. The spec gives it an open time of 10 mins at 21 c. Its a still a bit longer than standard PVA's which start to go off in a few minutes . I tried Titebond Extend once for some edge glueing but it still hadn't gone off after two hours ! For a long glue up session I now use a...

Is there any trick to make unscrewing easier from old wood?

The American store Rockler sell a nifty screw extractor. It simply removes a plug of wood around the screw and then you can use a molegrips to twist the screw out. It works a treat although maximum size is only 3/8 " Replace it with a glued dowel which is absolutely fine for inserting new screws.

    Edge join 6x2 for garden?

I always feel metal plates are a bit of a design failure. Why not simply glue them together using a waterproof glue ?. If pressed for sash clamps just use pocket hole screws and remove them when the glue has gone off. !

Best 6" Random Orbital Sander or should I get a forced rotation (geared) Sander?

I have the late lamented Mirka Ceros - the one with the separate transformer. I would say the 125 mm size is more useful than the 150 and dust extraction using the Abranet style disks is essential. I use a brand of disk called ' Seanet' which are much better value than the abranet.

    More wood identification please

There are a lot of African hardwoods that look like this but I'd suggest Afrormosia. It's a heavy and dense hardwood with 'dry season' dark bands. Like oak it reacts to ferrous metals so stainless steel fixings are recommended.

Best wood for a painted garden gate.

Ha Ha. The dust is like pepper in the air. As long as you have extraction on any machinery it will be fine. It is prone to movement however and best given a few days to rest after milling.

Best wood for a painted garden gate.

Iroko is probably the best overall value for money. Horrible stuff to work though.

Please help find a right pillar drill/ drill press/ drill stand for me

Have you a lathe ? Its not too difficult to make a horizontal jig to drill through the centre. It would be better to start with square stock but cylindrical could be used if well clamped. A 12.5 cm length bit from both sides would do the job.

    Finishing open grain/pore timber

Very old shellac will have gone off by now. If you try to use it the finish will be sticky and will refuse to dry. You have enough frustrations :D

Can I use an orbital sander, what pad (Ercol Restoration)

Sometimes sold under the 'Scotch Brite ' label. I see one on Amazon UK but it is a rip off at £32. I normally pay about $8 each on the US websites and it's worth the hassle of having them sent over Don't get the 'rust remover ' wheel - it's too hard..! Just be aware that there is a single and...

Help / Advice please on edging wood movement

It looks like the ply has shrunk and separated from the lipping. ? How long did the ply have to dry out after glueing ? I always find this technique very challenging - the mitres have to be perfect and if out by a fraction of a mm they will refuse to stay together. And yes, I think you have...

Can I use an orbital sander, what pad (Ercol Restoration)

No need for all that hand sanding. Just get a few 3M paint and varnish stripper wheels and use with an electric drill. They are tricky to find - I had to buy them off the US Amazon site but they are perfect for any varnish stripping.

    Chainsaw Guidance

I recently bought a Makita cordless with the twin 18 v batteries and it's excellent. I get about half an hour out of one charge. A spare set of batteries can be had for about £50 but the quality of generic batteries varies a lot. In general the more powerful the better and that's down to your...
