Help with selecting Iroko for garden gate

The existing hinges look like they could be recycled ? If they are 3" between the leaves I would laminate 1" and 2" boards with waterproof glue of course. With Garden gates you are allowed a little artistic licence.

Damn Yandles! I'm gonna go bankrupt at this rate!

Quality remains long after the price is forgotten.;)

Help with selecting Iroko for garden gate

Buy a cheap planer/thicknesser second hand then you have complete control over any wood you buy .You are at the mercy of additional service charges otherwise. Iroko is very durable but a bit brittle and needs dust extraction .The dust hangs in the air like pepper ! Adjust your dimensions to suit...

    Jewellery box

Thanks. As clamping these shapes is difficult I just use a miter bond instant setting glue and then insert splines. I tend to use thinner walls though - about 12 mm suits me and the side rail hinges I use.

    Jewellery box

Nice. How do you join the corners. ? Spline joints and then veneer over them. ? Andrew Crawford's books are a little hazy on the issue.

    Axminister Basingstoke 35% off everything

Bargain if it's the velcro type stick on which I doubt. I couldn't be bothered cleaning up after the adhesive pads.

    Book Shelves

If you mean finger jointing 50 mm strips end to end I doubt it would have to strength to carry books. It also looks a bit cheapo cheapo like all that rubbish furniture from the ' Far East ' In my view it's a mistake to make furniture ( including bookshelves ) with construction grade pine - it...

    Design Disaster????

I only ask one thing of anything I make - is it ' elegant '. Eh ................no !.

    Bevel Query

You could have a custom 50 degree bit with bottom bearing made. It depends on how badly you value the extra 5 degrees over a 45 degree bit.

Help please - truing the edges of a box

Don't be too hard on yourself - most of us have been there. You need two things - an absolutely perfect way of cutting your miters and cutting the lengths against a stop. Just feeling the lengths with your fingers inevitably leads to inaccuracies. I see loads of Youtubers simply taping miters...

    Cutting 12 mm balsa wood

I cringe when I see so called experts on TV using a steel rule. For about £4 invest in a Maun safety rule and a proper cutting mat.

Is it worth trying to repair these Teak chairs?

As far as I know the ancient art of shou sugi ban relies on the resin in softwoods turning into a kind of 'caramel ' under heat. I doubt if the teak contains much resin at this stage. If you want to use them outdoors I think the best option is a few coats of one of the black wood preservatives...

    Planer thicknesser

Quiet agree. My first P/T was an Elu 8" model. Bought for the affordable price and the Elu name. It lasted a few months before giving up. To my astonishment the drive gears were plastic and had of course worn out. It taught me never to trust a brand name on it's own.

Planing a board flat - Is there literally no light when testing with a straight edge?

I used to spend hours planing a perfectly flat edge for joining boards. Then I realized that a good blade in the tablesaw achieves the same results in minutes. I stick to Freud blades and make sure they are absolutely at 90 degrees to the tablesaw bed with a digital inclinometer. I have a DeWalt...

    Planer thicknesser

Scheppach used to make great machines before they went downmarket. Their HMS 260 and 3200 machines have two great advantages. They have the rollers close together so you can thickness lengths as short as 100 mm and the rubber rollers don't mark the wood so you can thickness down to about 3 mm. I...

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

Well worth a look. A lot of the designs are hand drawn with imperial measurements as would be expected. I make shaker furniture and one reason it is scarce is the amount of wastage incurred. For instance for a candlestand pedestal you need to start with a 4 " square blank. Not easy to find in...

    Warped planks/table top project advice

It's hard to see what good the bolts will do. The wood will move anyway when they are removed and have they made holes in the top ? You will always lose wood when planing from rough stock - the trick is to use methods that minimise it. Crosscutting across the top and then planing will reduce...

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

Famous for his rocking chair which is often copied. His furniture can be a bit chunky but living in California he obviously had an abundant supply of walnut.

Great cabinet makers of the 21st century

Quite agree. He makes glorious furniture hinting at the campaign furniture style. Did he ever sell that writing desk in Macassar Ebony ? !

    Multico morticer.

If that's the small benchtop model I can vouch for it. It's a good solid machine, plenty of power and very quiet. It lasted until I got a Domino and now I just use it as a drill press. You can change the chuck to take 1/2" bits no problem. £200 is probably the upper end for a small machine.
