How can I repair/remove a dark water stain on Oak laminate worktop?

Not come across oxalic acid before. Will that work on other woods like teak or sapele or is it purely suitable for oak?

Cheap digital, or quality dial ?

I lost my steel Mitatoyu (can't spell it & they're down in the cold workshop on this snowy day) verniers for three or four weeks until I succumbed to buying a new pair. I never got on with a dial gauge on the few occasions I tried to use them so bought digital for about £16. Original pair turned...

    P/T woes

Yes comparatively horrendous but without knowing the original length I'd end up buying two or three which is why I have posted the details above so hopefully others may be able to buy the less expensive option if their belt needs replacing. :)

    P/T woes

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments. I have fitted a new belt (~£27 eek!) and the P/T is now thicknessing again. @sometimewoodworker I must have the two ba$^£ds of belts. The original clearly has Elecktra marked on it several times but no size info. The replacement from Powertoolspares...

    P/T woes

@clogs I have now inspected my pulley: no apparent cracks or other problems with it. @Fergie 307 Good idea but impractical on theRecord/Elecktra Beckum as the pulley has a pinion moulded into the back of it - see photos - and the drive 'pulley' is the plain shaft of the cutter block. The...

    P/T woes

Thanks Geoff @SkyBlue63 . I was on the point of ordering a new belt this evening from Powertoolspares in fact, had I no more replies. I guess your comment about being sent the wrong belt means it appears a lot smaller than the existing one and therefore is quite a tight fit over the pulleys.

    P/T woes

The end of the cutter block shaft providing the drive is a plain shaft so there is no alignment as such. I assume the belt will find it's own alignment as the pulley is crowned. Yes the plastic pulley does have a crown. I'm virtually certain there is appreciable play in the main shaft...

    P/T woes

I have an old Record DMP106 planer/thicknesser that has just given it's thicknesser drive belt leave to go on holiday. Every time I go to use it the drive belt comes off the pulley so the thicknesser feed bars stop rotating. The DMP106 looks to be identical to the Record PT260 and the Elektra...

    Cordless Drills & Battery Conditioning

Cadmium is a heavy metal so difficult to dispose safely hence the move away from NiCAD batteries and cadmium passivation plating etc. NiCAD batteries are easier to charge and more forgiving when overcharged but are less energy efficient and self discharge more quickly than NiMH and Lithium...

    Round Lidded Garlic Box

If you've only a couple of garlic cloves in it do you even need holes. I have a pottery version without holes and the garlic seems to last perfectly well. Mind you a couple of cloves won't remain in there more than a week! Mind you many of the suggestions above look really good. Martin

    Using engines oil on tools

They say that there is no such thing as a stupid question but...... here goes - what is ATF- Acetone? And in what Proportions should it be mixed?

    Using engines oil on tools

My you must have a very large garage to house a few galleons within it. I'd love to have one but I live too far from the sea to be able to sail it. :giggle::giggle: (Sorry @SMALMALEKI I can be just too pedantic sometimes but it made me smile)

    B&D urban myth?

Much like @Mickjay I bought a B&D drill in 1972 ish but the hammer version. A collar in the gearbox broke after about 3years. Used the lathe in our design/model shop (I'm electronic not mechy) to make a new one + a spare and the mechy brains to tell me how to case harden it. It's still going...

List of British manufacturers of woodworking machines

How about Paramo? I have one of their replaceable blade planes that now uses Record blades. It was one of the first woodworking tools that I bought. Not sure if they are British though or what other tools they made.

how to build a shooting board and what plane to use?

Paul Sellers shows how to make a mean shooting board at Shooting Board - Woodworking Masterclasses It might be a little complex but it does both 90deg and 45deg in one unit. I'm contemplating making one as I don't have any SB. I think he also discusses what sort of plane, although it's almost...

    Oak Featheredge Cladding

I help maintain and restore the windmill at Nutley East Sussex so not too far from you. We occasionally need oak feather edge and get it from Willow saw mill at Five Ash Down just north of Uckfield. It is green so needs to be fixed in place reasonably quickly. Probably most sawmills will be able...

    Axminster Craft AC1400B Bandsaw.

@Padster , @Trainee neophyte Thank you for your comments. But Neophyte why did you post that photo? The missus thinks the reindeer cute. Another job before Christmas ;-( Have fun. Martin

    Axminster Craft AC1400B Bandsaw.

The one machine I would like to compliment my small workshop is a bandsaw. (I already have a P/T and an old flip saw plus a chip extractor though the latter would be the next improvement). I'm retired now and woodwork has become my hobby taking up more time than anything else. Well now I have...

What is an acceptable gap when using a hand plane?

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that PVA glue is good for joints with gaps up to 0.3mm but darned if I can remember where so 0.1mm or less is great. Also if you plane both boards at the same time your plane is on a wider surface so less able to rock/lean as you plane. Martin

    Electric vehicles

I haven't read all the pages of this thread, just from page 29, but only Mr Neophyte has touched on what seems to me to be the crux of the matter. Energy doesn't come for free. The raw material is either converted to a petrol/diesel liquid form and used in our vehicles locally or used to...
