New road tax charging rules wont just affect EV OR just new vehicles, its retrospectively changes your tax band

This evening I watched the Channel 5 programme about EV vs ICE (broadcast on Wednesday). Thought it used very unscientific methodology and didn't even mention any of the broader issues regarding extraction of lithium, disposal of same or flammability and cost of insurance for EVs or any...

New road tax charging rules wont just affect EV OR just new vehicles, its retrospectively changes your tax band

If people thought that tax free today meant tax free tomorrow then they trusted a government that they should have known well enough will change things as and when it wants. Do I feel sorry for them? No! They were sticking their collective heads in the proverbial sand. In a world where we as a...

    Thoughts on graphic's software

+1 for Designspark though I only use the DS Mechanical for 3D modelling prior to printing. For schematics and layout I use KCAD (I think that's correct - not at PC at the mo) For 2D stuff I use LibreCAD. I don't think you can draw a set of 2D drawings and transform them to 3D and I find...

    Twin Wall Polycarbonate

IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol - a (mild) solvent fairly readily available online and possibly in store though I've never looked for it or noticed it. IPA: Also available as beer but that only dissolves your brains. 🤣🤣 BRAINS: Another brand of beer brewed in Cardiff. Brains Dark is possibly my...

    Mortise & Tenon

I've an ancient tamper the head of which has always been a little loose. It had become extremely loose a couple of years ago when I went to use it so just put it into a bucket of water for a day or two. Nice and tight! It has now become as loose as it has always been so the bucket trick does...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Tom. Hi! I certainly don't want to be a kill joy and I do like your idea in general BUT those tealights can get extremely hot sufficiently so to ignite wood. I believe that it has caused house fires in the past. I'm sure someone here will have direct experience probably as a fireman. Sorry but...

    What capacitor for this motor?

As sideways say don't get hung up with specific values. Capacitors come in preferred values. 32uF normally isn't a PV but 33uF is and that will be fine. The next PFs are 27 and 39. 27 may be a little small but 39 will be OK. Likewise remember that 240VAC is the RMS value and may peak +10% giving...

Bosch Shredder - Last chance saloon?

Thanks @Geoff_S with your encouragement I've just done an online search for the helix blade. The dozen or so websites I looked at state the blade is not available and one says Bosch have discontinued it. 😭 Thanks anyway Martin

Bosch Shredder - Last chance saloon?

When my current lady and I got together we found we had two shredders. Hers is a Bosch just like yours while mine was a different brand and type. The Bosch is a worm in a cylinder type shredder so probably can't be sharpened. I've had it apart to a) unjam it and b) see if it could be sharpened...

    ...... without paying the earth.

@Distinterior and @Doug71 Thanks chaps. The Blum door release that you suggest is just what I'm looking for and at a reasonable cost. I knew someone would know. UKW doesn't let you down. 🙃

    ...... without paying the earth.

Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy some magnetic, push to release, cupboard door latches without paying silly money for them. The only real spec requirement is that it should only require a door to carcass gap of about 2mm, i.e. you push it in 2mm and it releases and pushes the door forward...

Ive done my time son, dont you worry about that.

Welcome. That's a wonderful bit of art/woodworking. Did you 'just' create the wooden parts or did you build the organ as well? Either way it's simply fantastic. Yes there are always those, far too many, who know better and whose way is the only way and will continue to stuff it down your...

    Good evening

Welcome @Daz Are you related to OMO or Tide? As Bingy man say most of us don't bite unless you mention sharpening then watch out. Most want to smile or a laugh and some even want advice or to broadcast their story but it's taken in a good way. Have fun. Martin

Fitting to go on the end of a painting pole

Like ChaiLatte I too say CHEAT. Buy whatever attaches to your pole, cut off the gizmo and glue the piece with the taper/thread to your own bottle squeeze. Have fun. Martin

    Charity Shop finds.

Wow that's brilliant if that's the result simply after soaking in vinegar and I guess a little wire brushing. I'll have to give it a go.

Tree removal, which type of drill?

Dave you give me the impression that you have access to your neighbor's garden such that you can only get to the tree from your garden. If that's the case then any and every attempt at removal is going to be a right pain. When we've had some trees removed the TSs have cut the stump pretty close...

Pillar drill chuck falls off - replace spindle?

Ah! My mistake. I assumed (i.e. made an *** of me!) the taper was rigidly fixed to the chuck and it was the taper-spindle interface not the taper-chuck one.
