    Joke thread

When a cat is dropped it always lands on it’s feet and when toast is dropped it always lands butter side down. Therefore if a slice of toast, buttered side up, is strapped to a cat’s back and the animal is then dropped, the two opposing forces will cause it to hover, spinning inches above the...

    Laser Engraver

Whereas I agree with @akirk I don't agree that you should buy the most powerful laser you can afford. The warnings given by @Craig22 are real even with low power lasers. There are reasons why BS/EN60825 (if my memory serves me correctly) limits visible lasers without some form of protection to...

    Hello from Cambridge

Welcome @MrTig . You and Peter are making me home sick. I've spent 25 years or so living in Fulbourn, St. Ives and Hilton and consider Cambridge environs "home" even having spent the last 10 years in Sussex. Enjoy the forum.

    Static in PVC Pipe.

My understanding of static is that it can only ever build up on non-conductive materials. There must be a means by which the positive and negative charges can remain separated. Otherwise they rush back towards each other and neutralise themselves. Thus static build up can never happen on a...

    Current overload

@phil_symonds Yes I believe so. I also think that the motor (of either variety) is unlikely to go pop loudly. It is more likely to be a capacitor either the start cap if it's an AC motor or somewhere in the electronics if it is a speed controlled DC motor. Martin

    Current overload

@phil_symonds keep us posted. I've mended a couple of variable motor speed controllers for friends of friends (I used to work with electronics before I retired) so may ge able to help. See if your electrician can determine if it's a DC or AC motor - it's often a DC motor in speed controllers ...

Adapt and Survive. In woodwork as well.

Wow! What an inspiration you are EG. Your story should be told far and wide especially to all those moaning minnies who want compensation after they get a pimple on their finger. Whatever it is you are doing, keep doing it. If you can bottle it please, please send me some. Keep healthy, keep safe.

    ***** question of the day....

Ah! The mist rises. I didn't get that you were talking about heated socks. 🥴 Glad you've found a way to keep your feet warm. 🙂🙂🙂

    ***** question of the day....

I I guess @Yojevol since you mention socks you realise that mAHr is not any measure of heat output. It's a measure of capacity as in batteries. If it lasts 18 hours then only 5000/18 = 277mA is drawn. At 5V it's a 1.3W heater! Not even going to keep your toes warm. Better keep your socks on...
