Nah! It was those two Roman guys Morecombus and Wiseus. 😁

    Compound mitre angles

Thanks Sgian Dubh (What does the Gaelic mean?). You have it exactly right so that's just what I need. "a finely wrought and delicate piece of furniture"! You've got to be joking. We're talking windmills. There's nothing that is finely wrought or delicate on a mill unless it's about to fall to...

Pete. Thanks for those. I'll store them away for another day should I need them again. Martin

    Compound mitre angles

I am making a new hopper for a vertical mill we are renovating at Nutley windmill in East Sussex. The hopper is an inverted truncated square cone. Does anyone recommend or have a calculator to give the two angles that I have to cut the boards in order to mitre the sides together. The sides of...

Covid vaccine, if you haven't had it ...

Deepest and heartfelt condolences Phil. There are never any suitable words for these occurrences.

    An interesting roof.

The roof and the lodge gate are beautiful, fantastic work - in fact words cannot do justice to that level of workmanship. BTW how is the roof to be covered, glazed or tiled or ??????? It will be a crying shame should your efforts not be on complete display.

    Another dilemma

@TRITON Does you mean you only need 1400 - 1500mm total 'cos you feed the timber in at one end and then the machine works itself along the timber moving up the workshop on it's wheels while the timber remains stationary? 🤣🤣

    Glue used?

+1 for pritt stick. I just dampen the paper with water when I want to remove it and it comes off easily. Interesting (maybe) side comment I used a pritt stick for the stainless steel riving knife I recently made (see separate post) and tried a WD40 solvent and it wouldn't touch it. Dropped it...

    Smoking Startrite table saw

Just made a replacement riving knife for my old Elektra Beckum flip saw. Works well. Please see my recent post in 'Post a Photo of the Last Thing You Made'. Just make sure the plate you use is thicker than the saw blade plate but thinner than the saw kerf. Martin

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Not woodwork but directly involved. A home made riving knife for my table saw out of 2mm stainless steel. Most cutting with a angle grinder with a metal slitting disc and a fare amount of filing. Works well and much safer than before. Strange shape allows 'cowl' to be mounted and adjusted to...

    Joke Thread II

This is novel: a joke thread with actual jokes. The joke thread is dead: long live the joke thread. 😂😂

    Fitting a ceiling light.

Agree with @Sandyn above. Many devices have an X capacitor (across L to N) fitted to reduce radio frequency noise going back down and using the mains lead as an aerial. They can give a fair jolt ( I'll let you guess how I know) especially if several devices are plugged in just waiting for some...

    Guitar Two...

Slightly off topic but interesting, to me anyway, but how do you determine the resonant frequency of wood? I have an idea to build a marimba and think it may be something to consider especially for the keys. Interesting to read this thread: the layman doesn't realise the bits and pieces you...

10mm holes in 8mm mild steel

    How can that ever work?

10mm holes in 8mm mild steel

I was drilling stainless steel. Knew it would be hard going so bought a pack of drills from Homebase. 🤯 Never again. Some of them even had the rake on the bit ground the wrong way. Have drilled SS several times successfully since, just gone slow with plenty of cutting fluid. Buy good, buy once...

10mm holes in 8mm mild steel

Yes to most of the advice above especially as slow as possible with the 10mm bit. I'd probably pilot with a drill just a little bigger than the 10mm bit's root so I guess about 4mm: that helps keep the 10mm centred. Plus it's often easier to drill 10mm halfway through then start again from the...

    My dilemma

Yes bit of a jack of all trades but when you're pushed for space..... I'd like a better fence on the chop saw, at right angles to the blade, so I can clamp place a stop for repeatable cuts but it was only £30 +a new blade so can't complain. It is an old Elecktor-Bekham and does work surprisingly...

    Joke thread

And not just UFOs. How about Japanese motorcycles and yobs (can we still call them that in this pc/woke age?) so called high performance cars?

    My dilemma

I agree with Mark. Nearly all my tools are secondhand: flip saw (table + chop saw), table top drill press, 10" disc sander, dust extractor, bandsaw, bench grinder, biscuit jointer, a couple of folding roller stands and a myriad of hand tools. About the only tools bought new are a track saw, a...
