    Wooden boat repairs

The old rotten keel and garboards are now removed. Pulling all those old galvanized nails without damaging the lands was very laborious. I set up the boat in a sort of improvised cradle to maintain it's shape while essential parts are removed. New garboards are steam bent onto overbent moulds. I...

How NOT to make field panels - Do Not Do this!

You did run it hand held didn't you? Router tables are for sissies ;)

    Shop made jigs and tools

Aye. I agree. Thre was once a rather bizarre discussion on a forum where the think tank tried to figure out which factory made and expensive router jig that would be best for a job which I told them I normally do in a matter of seconds with a hatchet.

    Wooden boat repairs

All the timber in the boat except the thole pins is spruce. The same timber as Brits call Norway Spruce. Ideal for a light and flexible hull. I will steam the garboards and cramp them onto overbent moulds so that when I fit them the twist is already there. This boat type was developed from oar...

    Wooden boat repairs

Another Göteborgseka for which I have made the bow and stern seats as well as plenty of custom stainless steel rig fittings got launched this summer The next boat project is getting started. This 19 foot double ender needs a new keel and new garboards and new stem knee. The boat was built...

    Thoughts on this.

Looks totally pointless to me. The edge will not become any straighter nor will this be faster than the normal ways of sanding an edge.

    Shop made jigs and tools

At one time jig making appeared to be a hobby on it's own to some people. It just went overboard. Just as gadgetry went overboard. The apparent decline in woodworking may have something to do with the gadgetry explosion and it's consequent costs scaring people away. This is the latest jig I...

    Starting out power tools

In my experience the table saw and the planer/thicknesser are the two machines that add most to the productivity. Everything else can be made using simple hand tools if there are limitations to space or budget. Only a couple of years ago I got around to get a router. Only then my production runs...

Budget Grinder Advice (NOT a sharpening thread!)

Secondhand is my suggestion. Shifting the bearings and mounting new wheels is always worth the cost on a good grinder.

    Quality Froe

The normal way of splitting kindling is to split the log standing on end until the chunks you make are too thin to stand safely on end. Then split them further in the horisontal position. Usually while holding the end nearer to you with one hand and starting splits in the end away forom you. In...

Advice needed jointer vs planer thicknesser

Two separate machines are more effeicient in professional use because you don't have to change over from surfacing mode to thicknessing mode and back. On the other hand they take up significantly more valuable space. You need both machines anyway. The advantage with a combination is that you can...

    Quality Froe

That Gränsfors froe is obviously electrically welded. With correct preheating and correct rods and slow cooling one can usually weld spring steel and tool steel electrically with good result. Fire welding spring steel to spring steel is very difficult. Old time blacksmiths and to a lesser...

Be thankful about budget if you hobby build with mostly or all hand tools...

I have always found it striking that the people in the self proclaimed "land of freedom" do submit to zoning laws so strict that both the parlament and the president's palace would be burned to the ground and every building inspector would be routed and hanged in the nearest tree if they tried...

Be thankful about budget if you hobby build with mostly or all hand tools...

And still you can get a decent industrial quality spindle moulder for 300 euros....or find an industrial bandsaw in a heap at the scrapyard. I really hope that theese price hikes will steer more people away for those mediocre China machines and make them appreciate secondhand machines.

    Repointing using lime mortar

The reason for slaking one's own lime is that the cheapest store bought slakelime is dry slaked. That is slaked with a shortage of water which leaves it powdery. Much easier to transport and sell as a powder in bags but much more didfficult to use. The real stickiness is only developed when lime...

    Spraying Tree Trunks with water

Thre are three very valid reasons: 1. Logs that are wet enough aren't as rapidly attacked by fungi and insects as logs that dry slowly. There is a critical stage in drying and an unbarked logs spends lots of time in that stage before it is dry enough to nt rot nor be eaten by insects. For this...

Where did all the water go?!?

The rising and sinking of various parts of the earth's crust is an ongoing process in many parts of the world. Where I live the land is rising out of the sea an an average rate of 1 cm a year over the last 1000 years. At the moment the rise has slowed down a bit partially because our part of...

    Clark single phase motor wiring

If a winding is burned one can very often see a bit of soot or some traces of overheating in that spot. In that case you could rewind the motor but it is a fair bit of work and a bit of a learning curve.

    Return to my workshop

My sincerest congratulations to you Mark! This is wonderful news. However this is the start of the real marathon. I have myself rebuilt my damaged back from full time bed patient to log house carpenter working on average 3-4 days a week plus joiner on average one day a week and I would think...

    Inflation Part 2

As far as I can see the inflation seems to largely stem from three sources: 1. Big finance producing money from thin air. In the past most currencies had a silver standard or a copper standard or a gold standard. Though various greedy rulers tended to dilute the precious metal content in the...
