Things to while away the day watching on Youtube

I am down with what in all likelyhood is a flue. Anyway I have some surplus time for once and is watching youtube and want to add some interresting films: The building of a traditional færing boat in Sogn in Norway: Raulandslaft a traditional Norwegian type of corner notch for log building...

    Buying my first bandsaw

Kan du finne ein brukt Luna? Dei gamla Luna sagerne fra Lini/Ejca i Värnamo er noko annat en kinasagene dei sell nå.

    HELP discontinued part

Wood is not very durable for such applications. Too soft and too unstable. I would look for a table from whatever bandsaw of the same size and have a machinist make trunnions to fit.

    Your oldest piece of machinery

My oldest machine is my 24 circular rip saw which was manufactured in 1885. It is almost ready to run but not in use yet. I am little by little making room for it in the workshop at the moment. Other elderly machines are: E.V.Beronius band saw. probably from the 1910-s Jonsered FM-C spindle...

Using washing machine motors for workshop machines

One of my waterstone grinder uses the three phase motor from an old industrial washing machine. Modern household washing machine motors seem to be pretty much useless. I prefere old industrial motors which I buy from a local scrap dealer for 50 cents a kilo.

    Entered a parallel universe

I once made custom windows and doors semi-professionally on a Stenberg KEV600 combination machine on 2,9 by 5,5 metres. It was inefficient yet doable. On 8 by 4 metres you should be able to fit is a good sized bandsaw and a planer/thicknesser combination. No problem.

    What would you buy?

I have three phase from the pole and avoid single phase machines as far as I can. Unfortunately there are no three phase hand held routers and drills on the market. However concerning bandsaws I would absolutely not shift the motor on a direct drive bandsaw. They generally had motors specificly...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

I am a few months short of 40 so I am too young to remember that far back...... but we had combined classes in school. We were 8 on my class combined with either a 7 or 8 pupil class. However I do remember farmers ploughing with Massey-Ferguson 35 and two furrow plough and I have some very faint...

    Are cheap cyclones any good?

100mm cyklones are easy and cheap to get off old hammer mills used in the past by farmers to grind grain for animal fodder. However as I see it the main problem with many cheap cyklones is that the shape of the air inlet and the lack of a ramp inside. This causes the air current to be less...

    Welder advice

Whatever route you choose get a good quality welder of sufficient capacity. That makes learning a lot less frustrating and maker your new skill once aquired a lot more useful. Myself I find stick welding with a DC welder to be the most useful method for my needs: -I very rarely need anything...

I find myself browsing band saws again... Help me compile a shortlist?

A bandsaw with larger diametre wheels can use a wider blade. As the curve of the blade becomes less accute. For wide blades it also helps with a frame that is as rigid as possible and thus able to hold the tension. You can resaw with a 12mm blade if you want but noone outside the the swankiest...

    I may need a new 610mm cutterhead

I may or may not get the opportunity to buy a Dornburg 610mm thicknesser next summer. However the cutterhead is of the dreaded clamshell type and in rather bad condition on top of that. The rest of the machine looks to be in good condition and it may end up very very cheap. So.....any ideas for...

    Game Changing Tools

My gamechangers so far have been: -A large enough planer/thicknesser for the work I do. This means a huge increase in productivity as I can dimension timber and platten most glue-ups in short time. I would never again try to make do without a 600mm capacity planer/thicknesser or equal separates...

    Electric vehicles

I just wonder how a 30 years old battery pack will work in -40 degrees celsius............. Because I am one of those who can afford to own a car because the car is old and financially speaking worthless and I do roughly 80% of the repair myself. Without a car I would also be without a job. I...

    Very old bandsaw

The cast iron guards were indeed pretty but the limited protection they offered was not enough for me to feel anywhere near safe around it nor for any insurance to cover a possible accident. The old guards were also very badly cracked and nickel welding them back together with pieces of plate...

    Electric vehicles

I rekon those of us who aren't rich will be forced to go back to woodgas conversions if oil based fuels are banned. Chevrolet Scotsdale and Volvo 245 are popular models for such conversions but I fear they will be in short supply at that stage. What then? It takes between 15 and 20 years for a...

    Your Cars

For 20 years I have driven an Opel Kadett E with 1,2 litre push rod engine manufactured in 1984. The same model was sold in Britain as Vauxhall Astra. It is the only car I have ever owned. Now it has 340000 kilometres on the clock and still going strong. Fairly good for it's size I would say...
