    Stop end or through mortice?

Sounds good. When repairing and copying old windows I have found that through mortises on average last longer than stopped mortises. At least in our climate. Therefore I use through mortises whenever I can on new casements. In my oppinion small casements are better left unglued and fastened...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

There are that woodwhisperer chap and many others who seem to have made it a mainstay of their business to promote certain brands. Unfortunately quite a few wiewers seem to be fooled. And then there are all those who think everybody must have a full lineup of whatever brand and promote that idea...

    The realities of tool ownership...

Most drills sold are probably of such terrible quality that they only last a few minutes of use...... My power tools tend to be used until the commutator is worn out. Those blasted *******s have quit selling spare commutators separately.......... and without a new commutator is is not worth the...

Replacing a splitter with a riving knife

There is a chap in Sweden who developed a very good riving knife with paralelogram movement for the Wadkin Bursgreen 10" AGS. Maybe something could be made along those lines.

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

I advocate buying high quality tools when you buy new and I almost always buy the best quality I can afford when I buy new but everything doesn't have to be neither new nor factory made. Sometimes buying new is worth the cost and sometimes not. Sometimes making a tool from scratch is worth the...

Paul Sellers and Old v New Tools

In my books it is a good thing that someone is trying to stem the spread of the ideas that tools must be shiny and expensive to do their job. However one always has to remember that there is not and has never been any "one size fits all" in woodworking.

    three phase motors

I am thoroughly sick and tired of home made motor replacements. Usually they end up with a motor that really doesn't fit in all dimensions and conclude that the machine is worthless to people like me...... who then struggle to find a motor that actually works.

    Which Arc welder?

Learning to weld with a too cheaply made welder is one of the most efficient ways there are to convince yourself that you lack ability to learn. A secondhand welder of good quality is usually a way better buy though it may need some repairs. As others have said you need a good welding mask and...

    Table saw vs band saw

Cutting rebates. Cutting straight and accurately. You need a big and solid bandsaw with a wide blade f you want to rip accurately on it.

    Doer Compact Tool Kit

To me it looks like one of those things custom designed and made for the sole purpose of selling. Not for being used at all.

    Any toolboard recommendations please?

A piece of thick chipboard and some three inch nails and some home made wooden brackets. Sounds crude but works surprisingly well.

    Table Saw Power Questions

My experience is that anything less than 2,2 kW /3 hp will struggle and ultimately burn itself out when ripping two inch thick timber. If you are very good at sharpening old style carbon steel or HSS blades and have a saw with a low enough RPM for those blades you could make do with a bit less...

Turning Garden Ornaments in to Working Tools

Glad to see those vices resurrected! The anvil by the way looks very good. No junk anvil would survive the amount of wear needed to wear down the edges like that. We all need an anvil don't we.

How you know people are interested in fake woodworking...

The axle (think it is called wind shaft in English) is ballanced so that most of the weight is on the front bearing just inside the wings. The bearing is a hollowed out piece of granite and as you said open on top. The shaft is shod with longitudial spring steel bars let into the timber. The...

How you know people are interested in fake woodworking...

Ister=lard Mixed with a bit of stockholm tar and used as lubrication. It sticks to the bearing surface and makes it slippery.

How you know people are interested in fake woodworking...

I think D_W has a very valid point though it at times gets lost in a dense underbrush of irritation and frustration. As I get it the point is that many of the more famous youtube "woodworkers" are more about acting and storytelling and marketing than about showing and teaching how the thing...

    Sauter router accessories

I have one of those Suchner motorn in my router table. Excellent quality as far as I can tell. This far it seems to be worth it's price though it was expensive. However I cannot comment on the Sauter router lifts since my router lift is home made using parts from a line shaft driven wood framed...

    why buy old vices??

Judging by the number of cheap vices with serious fractures in them that I see in the heaps at the scrap yards I frequent they are an utter waste of both money and natural resouces. I rekon I could easily have collected a metric ton or two maybe even three tons of them in the last 6 or 7 years...
