    Five head planer

The electric grid in our village has recently been improved so I can get almost any amount of electricity from there if I was willing to pay. At the moment we have 3x25 ampere at 400 volt and it could be extended to 3x32 ampere. Beyond that the network fees go completely through the roof and...

    Five head planer

A friend has died and his family wants to get rid of his old Waco five head planer. It is a flat belt driven machine from the early 50-ies. Apparently little used. He bought it secondhand in the late 70-ies intending to set up a planing business but it ended up becoming a house painting business...

    Bench Drill Advice

In my oppinion those V-belt driven drill presses are all pretty useless for metalwork. Most of tem cannot handle anything bigger than a 12 or 13 mm drill before the belt starts to slip and the lowest speed is way too high for dilling anyhing larger than that in mild steel or drilling any hole at...

    Planer Thicknesser advice.

As pretty everybody else seem to talk about cheap beginner grade models from China I want to point out that there are two ways to go. Either buy cheap and if you keep working wood upgrade in several increments, or buy once and keep the machine for life. We are all different. Some are impulsive...

    Planer Thicknesser advice.

It is indeed possible to make do without a planer/thicknesser. I did so for many years and hand planed everything. This was so slow that I didn't get very much made. Then I bought my first planer/thicknesser which was a 10 inch Ejca. It was some 60 years old and partly disassembled in cardboard...

    Interest rates and mortgages.....

Just an idea: What would happen if you buy the piece of land now and extend the house later? Construction materials are at an all time high all while there is quite a bit of uncertainty concerning future interest rates and property values. Land must be bought when it is for sale but in a few...

    Energy Saving

To my understanding it is about spreading the risk. If you have 40 hectares f solar panels in one place and a cloud passes by you get a significant dip in production. If you have a few square metres here and there it is less likely that a disturbance happens everywhere at once. It may also be...

    Workshop layout help/advice?

I would try to put the bandsaw where you planned for the drill press. To get outfeed space for the planer/thicknesser. The drill press culd stand where you planned for the bandsaw as both table and head can be swiveled out of the exact line of the planer-thicknesser. If the bandsaw stands where...

    Workshop layout help/advice?

I agree. On a workshop that size you will need strathegically placed hatches in the walls for ripping and planing. Use the upper parts of the walls for shelves and cabinets for less often used tools and materials.

    Energy Saving

I don't think electic vehicles are an immediate solution to the traffic caused carbon dioxide problem. Not in their current shape. To charge the number of electric vehicles necsessary to keep our car-based society going we need a massive increase in power generation and an entirely new electric...

    Energy Saving

I agree. The worst thing I do is driving approximately 12000 kilometres a year by car. That is a good example where I wait for government intervention as I cannot change it myself. We need functional bus lines in the countryside as well as a diversified job market where everything doesn't...

    Polestar 2 anyone.?

745 was the station wagon version of 740.

    Energy Saving

I am doing a bit. Still not enough but as much as my very fragile private economy can withstand at the moment. My next big step withing a few years will be to move my part time workshop home to reduce commuting. At the moment I am squrreling together secondhand and leftover materials and...

    Energy Saving

Animals have their place in the future supply system though significantly less dominant than now. There are plenty of areas where grass can be grown for animal fodder while the soil is too poor or the climate to harch or the conditions otherwise unsuitable to allow for any greater production of...

    Energy Saving

Yep. The sea plays a vital role. The reason why I talked about planting trees is that they have the longest lead time and also make an easy starting point. Just as Chris and Jacob say we must do things about the sea too as well as lakes and bogs and other watery places. I rekon that all fish...

    Polestar 2 anyone.?

After Volvo quit making the 745 the overhyped name was all that was left of what once was a maker of super reliable well designed cars and some of the best farm tractors in the world.

Stanley (?) plane, type 4 - restoration advice

Both Stanley and Ohio tools and maybe Sargent as well used that type of frog seating for a while. The frog tends to nod forward when the blade hits a hard knot and the concept was abandoned except on the cheap Stanley Handyman line. I suspect that plane may maybe be an east bloc product. I have...

    Energy Saving

I agree! Disposability and throwaway consumerism fits together with sustainability like eyeglasses on an elk........ (Finnish saying) They are just not compatible and we will need to come up with whole new ways of doing things. One of the first things to to is to plant trees because that is...

Should I make my workbench entirely by hand?

I planed a lot by hand before I could afford a secondhand planer/thicknesser. Because that was what I could afford to do. It was doable but the problem was that I spent so much time planing that I just couldn't possible make the stuff I wanted to make. There wasn't time enough. We need to...

    Water (and other things) Divining

Once upon a time I was working on the foundation for a new sauna for a well known dowzer hereafter called D. While we were at it D used those rods around the worksite and found a line of some sort that passed where the sauna stove and the chimney were to be and that caused lots of worries as D...
