    Help please in Northamptonshire

Please don’t put a handsaw in a 260mm piece that is being spun on the lathe! OK if lathe is off and you turn the piece by hand as you saw.

Personalised markings for items you have made

I use a pyrography pen with 'wire' tips. I made up a tip which burns a C shape and use this to burn a central O and a C on each side, then use a writing tip to add in the quarter circles on the outside. As most of what I do is turning it is nice to have a mark with rotational symmetry!

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Left as it is it would make a stunning lamp base!

    Turning speeds

Generally speaking, it is easier to get a good cut with a high speed but you will often need to start slow if your piece is not balanced. With a digital control you can start very slow (for safety) and gradually turn up the speed until your lathe starts to shake, then turn it down a bit and take...

    Men Sheds!

I first discovered my local (Exmouth) Men's Shed just after I retired, nearly 6 years ago. At the time I was trying to restore a very basic treadle lathe which someone had given me. At the Men's Shed I was shown how to turn brass parts that I needed and I was able to use a variety of wood...

    Running out of time...

Paul, you wrote, 'The net result of all this is everyone believes their view is in the majority and any alternative view is from a non desirable ‘type’ in society.' Was it really so different when everyone got all their news from one or two regular papers?

    Decent Affordable jobsite Table saw

I have the Evolution Rage and the fence is fine on mine - locks front and back which is a plus and the sliding table is handy. Folding, wheeled base is great for portability. I have a very tiny workshop so it is good to be able to fold it away when not in use (and I have made a top to go on it...

    "FACT!"

I believe that serif fonts are skeuomorphs from text carved in stone, the serifs being to allow clean ends to lines. I suppose that they could serve a similar function in print, making it a tad easier for readers to see the ends of strokes. This could be particularly useful where print is a bit...

    Eucalyptus

I have a eucalyptus in my garden and had to have it cut back as it had overgrown its position. I kept some logs and most split very dramatically (and quickly) but some were good for turning. First photo is the first bowl I ever turned on a powered lathe - turned when the eucalyptus was very...

Sawing / cutting turned wood on a lathe

I have a premonition of saw catching and being pulled out of your hand before hitting the bedways!

Compressor is good for blowing dust out of nooks and crannies (respirator on) - then leave to settle and vacuum.

A deaf persons internal monologue ?

MichaelChou's comment about whether internal dialogue is in your own voice got me thinking- I am pretty sure that my internal dialogue does not have a 'voice' - it operates more at the level of word meanings than sounds, from a part of the brain 'above' aural processing. The adaptability of...

What has caused these vertical marks?

I wonder whether the tearout may be made worse by your tool 'bouncing' over those little knots. As Oldpete says, higher speed should help, and possibly a bit of support on the outside of the cup to reduce any chatter.

    Is it any wonder why.....

Well it won't encourage MORE young people and disadvantaged people to vote, even with the (expensive) sticking plaster of the voter ID form. Interesting that a senior Railcard is OK but a young person's rail card isn't. Why might that be, I wonder?

The things your parents said to you...

My mother in law had a rather dim view of pretty much everyone's motives. If she was confronted with an example of someone doing something kind she would say 'they're only doing it to be nice', implying that people are only ever kind in order to impress anyone who might notice. She had a tough...

    Powered Respirators

This is a really interesting thread - I am sure it should be possible to design and make a system to deliver filtered air to a face mask for a lot less than the professional kit (as Rewound is demonstrating). If air could be drawn from outside the workshop it might be even easier - when I am...
