Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Lidded pot made from oak I was given.

What would this wood be, then?

Definitely is oak. I cut it all up with the chainsaw and managed to get some decent lumps without too many splits. Today I made the big lump at bottom left of the photo into a lidded box. My arms and face were black from the tannins.

What would this wood be, then?

I have been given some nice big lumps of this. Lots of big splits and spider nests but I should be able to find some decent pieces in the bits in between. I chiselled off a bit - redder underneath - oak maybe?

Does look like cherry from bark but it has grown super fast

Do fix broken stuff or buy again?

I enjoy the problem solving aspect of fixing things, and I can now afford to waste time fixing something that would be cheaper to replace if I costed my time! Tumble dryer power switch just broke (again). I took it apart to find I had mended it before. Ordered new part and found I had bought...

cleaning rust from machine tools ?

I have some citric acid in powder form. Does anyone know what proportions of powder to water are needed to get the necessary strength?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Finally finished a pair of 'cuksas' for my son and his girlfriend. They are made from elm from one of three trees I had to have cut down as they had succumbed to Dutch Elm disease and risked falling into the road. Mounted half logs on lathe to turn the inside of the cup then cut out on bandsaw...

    Thin Parting Tools

I made a parting tool from an old keyhole saw blade. I haven't got around to putting a handle in it yet but it is good for smallish jobs

    Thicknessing small pieces of wood

What MichaelChou said, stick down 'rails' either side of a piece of MDF, with pieces stuck down between them

Jet JWL 1220 on off switch not working

New switch arrived, wiring is pretty straightforward, two from mains supply at bottom and two to motor at top. I was able to check which connections were which by jiggling the cables. All sorted and working perfectly! I celebrated by making some knobs for the lathe on the lathe!

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Today I made knobs for my lathe. Both turned from bits of yew. Little handle for tailstock wheel and T handle for locking tailstock.

Jet JWL 1220 on off switch not working

I took out the switch. Took it apart, cleaned up contacts and put it back again. Same problem. So I have ordered a new one (Kedu KJD 20-2). Hope I can remember which wire goes where!

Jet JWL 1220 on off switch not working

Thanks Linus. I thought it would probably be a dust problem. I will start taking things apart (after unplugging!)

Jet JWL 1220 on off switch not working

I went to turn a tool handle and my lathe just won't stay on! I have a Jet JWL 1220 (not the variable speed model) and I have been very happy with it but now it won't stay on. It has the two button switch (green 'on' above red 'off') and it runs when I press the green button but stops as soon as...

    OMG! this looks brilliant

And it doesn't come with the router, table or mitre fence!

    OMG! this looks brilliant

But have we scratched the surface of what it can do yet? Think of the hours of fun to be had checking calibration!
