    What is this wood?

I turned two more (slightly bigger) bowls today and the old-timers at the men's shed reckon it can't be beech (bark is wrong). They settled on bay, which seems quite likely, judging from the regrowth in the hedgerow they came from.

    Another wood identification puzzle

I agree, it should all be cut down for turning!

    Another wood identification puzzle

Thanks Adam. I have been lucky enough to be able to learn from some very experienced 'old-timers' at my local 'Men's shed'. As well as all the YouTube videos!

    Another wood identification puzzle

His loss! I really enjoyed turning it, partly because of the fragrance but also because it seems (so far) to be pretty resistant to checking.

    Another wood identification puzzle

A friend gave me a couple of logs from a conifer felled in his garden. One was over 18" across. I have turned some big bowls from the green wood and it smells gorgeous. Even after it has been oiled or waxed, a bowl can fill the room with its fragrance. The bark is very thick and fibrous, almost...

    What is this wood?

No. No really noticeable smell. I have turned holly before and I am pretty confident that it isn't holly.

    What is this wood?

I'm pretty sure it's not holly. Bark is darker. I have just cut a bigger log and flecking looks like beech!

    Fed up sharpening pencils

I have drilled pencil size holes in shelves, walls and everywhere around workshop and try to remember to put pencils back in one after use - does save a bit of time. Zebra Delguard propelling pencil (Zebra Pen Delguard Mechanical Pencil, Fine Point, 0.5mm, Black Barrel, Refillable, 1-Pack...

    What is this wood?

Can anyone identify this wood? My neighbour gave me a few logs after he cut down a row of trees in his hedgerow. Could it be (diseased) elm? I have turned 4 small bowls so far and I really like the patterning!

Need some help with table saw choices.

Have you looked at the Evolution Rage 5S? The folding base makes it really handy for a small space. It has a very good fence and the sliding table is good for cross cutting. I have made a cross cut sled for mine and I get very clean cuts.

    Countersinking

Running a 'normal' countersink bit in reverse also gives a cleaner finish.

Dewalt DW3401 bandsaw replacing bearings on bottom wheel

Many thanks Triton, From the image of the replacement axle it looks as if there may be a bearing pre-installed on the axle, which might explain the tight fit but I will try a combination of WD40 and patience!

Dewalt DW3401 bandsaw replacing bearings on bottom wheel

My Dewalt DW3401 bandsaw ground to a halt (motor hums but blade won’t move) so I took the blade off and found the lower wheel was really hard to turn. I am pretty sure it needs new bearings and I have ordered a pair from Tools and Parts Direct but I am having trouble getting the wheel off so I...
