    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

Very sensible. Always wear safety classes, I've seen their benefit on several occasions. One thing that struck me, you mentioned saw dust etc. Probably worth carefully sweeping and vacuuming it up every few days as dust is not only toxic but flammable. In fact fine dust can explode if in...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

I I've just been onto their web site and the white spirit sold seems to all have BS 245, and the turps substitute specifically says not as well refined at WS so not suitable as paint thinners. I think your enquiry has sharpened the practice. Its looks a decent store I'll look for one...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

Yes . I often do so as it's much safer. We have a shaded patio area and on a suitable day I varnish and paint out doors. Not always possible in the UK! If you melt the wax in the Bain Marie , turn off the heat, and then stir in the turps you will be fine. I salute your safety consousness...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

Um, not sure I'd trust B&M to know. B&Q yes, but a bargain basement company, you wonder what audits they do on suppliers?? I imagine some years its good stuff ie left overs from a reputable supplier (even reputable ones in China) and some years its, um, lll Russian or Chinese anything goes.

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

No you will be fine doing this in a ventilated shed. Just don't slosh solvent around willy-nilly. If you spill it, wipe it up and then leave the room for a bit. Masks of that sort eg N95 will be of no use as the solvent will diffuse through them in the air, the molecules are tiny they are...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

Good points. Sorry I've probably been a bit loose as my bottle has White spirit and turps sub written on it. Bs245 and Din 51632 are the best ones to go for. They will all smell of oil, but cheap Turps substitute may well smell of aromatics (a sweetish smell, toluene, xylene but more...

How do you do it? Your business

I feel for you. Up until 2005 there were no requirements for ' legal immigrants' or anyone to work or set up work in the UK. If you were EU or legally in UK, you just applied for a NI number and that was it. We could employ anyone. I remember French staff members being astonished at this...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

I've used white spirit/turps substitute successfully for softening wax polish it works well as does genuine turpentine, but its much cheaper. Here are a few observations over the years and also I'm a working chemist so can comment on chemistry and safety. I dont think you need the expense of...

Advice on buying an emergency generator

Is Clarke an ok supplier? They seem to have a good range to choose from - they get good reviews on their website...um.. I bought a Clarke grinding wheel 20 years ago from our local builders merchant and its still going well, it came with a clarke catalogue (pre-internet) but I felt the tool...

Advice on buying an emergency generator

wow, thank you all for the advice. I thought I'd start by only asking about the type of generator and then start to discuses the electrical set-up, especially as that might be influenced by the type of geny (power especially). Thank you for the good advice on fuels types, also maybe go...

Advice on buying an emergency generator

A question probably for the electricians amongst you. I'm being encouraged by my better half to get an emergency generator for the house so that we can function during power cuts and maybe for a while if Mr Putin does his worst. We had a long Pcut last month whilst I was away and apart from...

Dewalt Radial Arm Saw DW 720

I have one. They cost ca £2000 new, looking at your friends, it should fetch upto £500 on ebay seen some of that vintage for about that price. However the technology is a bit dated so not a popular as before so she should not be disappointed above £350. Dont tell her the new price, no need...

    How do u keep ur's.....?

Agree. If its isnt a problem why fix it. (unless its an HSE matter), we have a practical hobby where pragmatic things work. Some people enjoy fitting out their shop with well made beautiful fixtures, others a rough and ready tool wall. Both work and suit the need. However the over under...

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

this crossed in the post, I'd agree but just soak a kitchen towel with milton etc and leave on the surface. see my comment for where to get these things

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

Crikey what a lot of answers. As a professional chemist I can say that most if not all the above solvents will remove Sharpie on most plastics with a smooth surface or not too old. However I suspect in your case the dye has got into the pores of the plastic and the dye binder has probably...

    How do u keep ur's.....?

Great Video. Mountaineers use the same technique to coil their long ropes, its reduces the twist build up in the coil. Excellent video, I've going to share it with our local church choir as, boy, do they run through cables.

    How do u keep ur's.....?

I bought a pack of 50 of these, used a good deal of them. about a fiver, gone up since as every thing has. If I was to buy again I'd get slightly longer as 8'' is a bit short for long cables. Use all over the house and the garage/shop. sometimes have to add two together to get a longer...

    Table saw safety

You done good as they say. Its hard giving friends advice like this. You have done him a good turn. Maybe he should get you or others of experience from the community to lay the law down for his shed. The HS&E guidance is very clear. Best wishes Tom

    Table saw safety

I agree, the more I think about it, the guy is really exposed, especially given what table saws can do.... If something bad happened the HSE call in the police and he will face a criminal charge. Tact is probably required here if he is in the dark on these matters but HSE is pretty clear...
