Axminster AT406WL or Record Power Coronet Herald?

Dave, I would recommend having a look to see if there is a turners club nearby. the AWGB has a list. map and also a list. Club Map – AWGB, Some clubs can be a bit of an oldies clique but many offer demos and teaching days and experienced members and are very welcoming of new blood and also...

Close call and a lucky escape....

Firstly you did the right things quickly getting the fire out and putting it out with water. So your quick thinking saved the day. As for lessons learned. I agree with this suggestion. Whilst recommend having a fire extinguisher in the shed/shop CO2 etc. Having the ability to pour water...

    M2 Screw? What bit please?

iFixit get a lot of good reviews, I'm tempted, like clamps can you have too many screwdrivers?? I have virtually all the securtiy ones, but ...

    M2 Screw? What bit please?

Increasingly screws are proprietary which is going against 150 years of standardisation from BSW onwards. I'm sure they do this so that you have to take it to their repair shops. JIS is ok as its a Japanese standard and has been in use in current form since 1946 and it pretty standard across...

    M2 Screw? What bit please?

No its a general set for basic stuff. But for £20 covers all the bases. It contains flat cross head 4 sizes 1.5, 2, 3, 4mm Philips head 4 sizes. 000, 00, 0, , 1. Torx 4 sizes, 05,06,07.08 I find for some Asian stuff eg toys/iPhone with JIS heads, the Philips head works fine as they aren't...

    M2 Screw? What bit please?

That is that is really useful, I hadn't seen the magnetiser before, I'll get one of them. I've added a post of the set I have that is only £20 and has a better selection of Ph and tx than the Wera £37 twelve set, so if dont want to spend £90. Contains: flatH 1.5, 2. 3 &4mm, Ph 000, 00, 0...

    M2 Screw? What bit please?

Hi Dave, I bought this set from an brilliant hardware store in Ripon about 10 years ago. It contains 6 double ended bits down to Philips 000, 00 and 0 pluss tx and flat head. NOT CHEESE a bit fiddly as you have to swap out the head into the handle but have worked well on all those cheap...

    Anybody else love bandsaws?

Great to hear your success with the band saw. Chippendale didn't have a table saw, so you can survive without one. For most hobbiests you can get away with a bandsaw and hand saws. It takes practice to lean to cut accurately on any saw, but with practice you can get good enough. A TS is...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

Four teenage boys in North Yorkshire, we get through bags of potatoes, mash, roast, wedges and refried chips in a deep fryer?- it has a thermostat? . I'm probably heading for a coronary but they have hollow legs. 😊 I'd probably tackle a fire with a blanket in the first instance, as I'm not sure...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

oops. I'd hate to say it will go swimmingly and be proved disastrously wrong. As Jacob says these events are rare - they do happen occasionally. someone talked about the fire triangle. Your vice should remove the heat and if there is no other combustible material then the rags would just...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

Yes it is pretty perfect for this job. Steel, stainless steel or Pyrex will be fine. Stainless better than mild steel. Although there may be some iron and chromium sites on the metal that catalyse the turps oxidising, the surface area of a polished pot is so small that it has a negligible...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

seems low risk to me. Vice will be a heat sink so should prevent auto combustion. As long as not in contact with flammable stuff such or a flammable floor below, then if it did go up in smoke nothing to spread the fire. Nearly all the reported fires happen overnight when things are left...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

my first thought was WHAT.. but a class mate of my 14 year old burnt his parents house down attempting to cook Cherios (a breakfast cereal) in the toaster. What my son finds funny, is his mate got a medal from the scouts for alerting the fire brigade and saving his family. I suppose...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

If you clean the brush and wash it with soap and water it will be harmless. Recommended as leaving these finishing oils on the bristles, the oil will harden and damage the brush. Even then if left, its less likely to be a hazard, less surface area on a brush, although a very large brush...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

Not that uncommon, unfortunately its a bit too common. Famous fire at Meridian plaza and lots of HSE cases in UK. One Meridian Plaza - Wikipedia. Its an inherent hazard with finishing oils. Most finishing oils (Linseed, Tung, Teak, genuine turps) contain unsaturated chemical bonds, these...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

Agree, see my reply to @Distinterior . Worth keeping the old ones (in a home situation) in reserve as properly certified will last beyond the use by date. keep as a back up. Power is very messy, but very effective, if practicing, use outside. And if used on a car engine, you may write it...

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

For certainty that's what you should do - and must do at work. However properly certified fire extinguishers will last for a very long time. So for home, I'd keep the old ones. I've got an old BCF one from 1986 in my garage. I'm 99.999% certain it will work.

A lesson learned on oil-based finish rag disposal

SPOT ON. Eliminate the source. For a pan fire a fire blanket is best. But turn of the stove first. A guy in my lab put the blanket on the chip pan at home, but forgot to turn the stove off. It put out the fire and his family retreated to the sitting room to get over the shock, but it...

    Which turpentine for beeswax finish

I'm with your on this. The past chair of the HSE was Dame Julia Hackett (ex ICI). She railed against enforcement of daft rules, nearly always by people who couldn't be bothered to do things properly so banned them. At one point our city banned pancake races citing HSE and Dame Julia verbally...
