Vertical support beam - concerning cracks

Have an extension and noticed the vertical beam (that I assume supports structural horizontal beams) has got some very large cracks in it. Is this something I should be concerned about and if so, is there a "fix"?

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

Think your comment is far removed from reality. Homeowners simply don't have enough regular work to form a relationship. There is no way you honestly believe the majority of Joe public are "tricksy". My experience however is that the vast majority of trades are.

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

Agree with the maths there. We are talking decent tradesmen, ie a certain minimum quality. £300 a day, broadly speaking is a fair average rate. to the source of my point here, what I loathe is the add ons ie someone quotes theoretically for £300 for a day's labour but then adds substantial...

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

Think I'm just old fashioned. I don't like the "what I can get away with" approach. Much prefer a view of what my time and skill is worth and act accordingly. If extra jigs and skill is required, adjust the price but don't add half a day rate on for a small extra bit of work just because you...

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

10 must be a record! Good price indeed but to Bingy point, you paid a decent day rate for a day's work. I think there should definitely be reward for experience and skill and that trades should be rewarded for speed (as long as not at cost to quality) ie if they can what is generally regarded to...

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

Totally agree but what I've started to notice is flat rate add ons that don't reflect the time. That's why I use the bathroom lock example. I know on average 5 doors can be fitted in a day. I know that if needed, 5 doors with bathroom locks can be fitted in a day. Yet I'm seeing some charge an...

What do you charge - bathroom locks/doors

Seems up and down the country there is quite a range on internal door fitting costs, £50 the norm in some places, £100 in others. But what about the hardware side of things, how much more would you charge if it's a bathroom latch for example instead of standard tubular?

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Looking through their stuff and looks decent, solid core as you say, 6mm trim around the sides and 50mm off the bottom. Had never heard of them before yet they say they are the largest UK timber door supplier which is good and a decent array of sizes (although bespoke has a 5 month lead time). I...

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

That's a very nice looking door and agree with you, that spacing looks good. Thank you

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

I like that a lot, thank you! Ah ok, right that makes sense. What sort of gap are you leaving around the door - frame perimeter, something 1-2mm type thing?

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Thought I'd have a check of the old doors I took off. They are definitely solid wood but wondering if they are old pine (given the knots) as opposed to anything fancier. Also noticed the beading appears to have been added at a later date and not the best. Given I'm changing hinge opening and...

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Think I get it, basically there is 10mm available but would be silly to trim close to that given the core so the 5mm is the recommendation for max trim to basically allow it to take a knock.

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Unfortunately I'm so west I'm close to Lancashire! Of the 5 doors I am ready to have fitted now, only 1 has architrave both sides and 1 on one side. Often the simplest solutions are the best and Doug I think your idea there about packing under the casing heads is a great one. What sort of gaps...

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Had a walk around with the tape measure yday and unsurprisingly/unfortunately my door openings don't seem to play nice with off the shelf doors. Most are roughly 760 x 2012. Given 762x1981 and 813x2032 seem to be the standard dimensions, the former would leave too much of a gap and the latter...

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

Hi Doug thanks for all of that! Hinges: based on what you've said I think I'll look at the 3" ones instead then as with a 50mm width/25mm a side that should look a lot better on a 35mm door. I don't really notice hinges that much i.e. I am definitely looking to get the ones that operate rather...

Internal doors - "solid" oak and other queries

I've been encouraged by the Mrs to get doors fitted to help control the dust I'm creating during the renovation. We like the idea of solid oak for durability/longevity and as it will be more forgiving/adjustable for the old frames. A few questions if I may: 1) Where to people source their...

Rail/stile router bits + panel size

Thank you... This was exactly what happened. First time using the sash clamps bought for this purpose. Sacked it off and made another one which is currently curing with clamps on the shoulders only, flat to the clamp bar and only under required pressure so fingers crossed thats one chalked up to...

Rail/stile router bits + panel size

Well that's a tad annoying, excited this morning to mount the doors after the glue up yesterday and notice I've obviously clamped with far too much pressure on one of them as it's now warped a stile. Given the glue has cured, is there anything I can do to salvage it start again? Separately...

    Basic router questions

Ha not forgotten but was a painless transition... My previous hobby was photography and I've sold all my equipment and now have a pot to buy woodworking stuff 😂 it's lovely gear and really enjoy using it

    Basic router questions

Putting updates on a separate thread around rail/stile router bits but just to close this one off, very happy with the recommendations on here and loving the new kit. Added a Rockler coping sled and it's given me a lot more confidence around the table
