Handheld vertical drilling - Jig, press or other?

Just to add to the discussion on drill guides etc (ref the original question, not so much re drilling in walls), I bought one of these some years ago Vintage Sears Craftsman 9-11224 Precision Drill Guide Portalign Box Instructions | eBay I had looked at the UJK guide, which looked nice, but...

Can anyone recommend some concealed / floating shelf brackets?

These are the Hafele ones I have used successfully - you can see all the details Concealed Shelf Support, for Installation into Woodwork or Masonry Walls - Häfele U.K. Shop There is no risk of the shelf slipping off these brackets - assuming you have a reasonably snug fit - more likely you have...

Can anyone recommend some concealed / floating shelf brackets?

These brackets are the right thing for the job - I have used them for various things (from Hafele). You need to cut out a little housing for the main bracket part and otherwise a reasonably accurate 12mm hole (you can knock up a jig if you don’t have a suitable drill guide). The inclination...

Planer Blades - Are Tungsten Carbide Worth The Extra Cost?

I bought some TC knives for my big planer over 5 years ago - OK I am an intermittent user, but I only just switched the knives around a few weeks ago! They were still cutting ok, but they had slightly dulled, most noticeable on planing rather than thicknessing. My planer takes 410mm Centrofix...

    New (old) bandsaw motor

Ah! Let’s hope mine lasts a good while longer yet. It certainly stops dead. Thank you for all the education. Cheers

    New (old) bandsaw motor

I assume this clutch-type of brake is stronger/quicker-acting than an electronic brake given the considerable mass of two heavy spinning cast iron wheels? The blade speed is quite a bit higher than my previous bandsaw, so there is a lot of momentum to bring to a halt. It seems the only real...

    New (old) bandsaw motor

Thanks again @deema - I absorbed your Minimax thread a while ago with great interest - I am hoping not to have to mess with the wheel tracking, but we will see - I was referring to centreing the blade on the wheels which I do by tensioning the blade then spinning the wheels with my finger whilst...

    New (old) bandsaw motor

Thank you @deema - that seems a pretty good explanation all round. I am pretty certain that the motor is original - the lower sticker in the picture below is the Scheppach part no, I think. I had noticed that the motor looks long and was guessing that the braking arrangement may be something...

    New (old) bandsaw motor

Thanks. My observations are from the motor fully disconnected from the drive belt. The wheel bearings are fine (actually one of the top wheel bearings has a hint of a tinkle when the wheel is spun so I will replace them). Cheers

    New (old) bandsaw motor

Forgive me if this is an ignorant question… I am just recommissioning a bandsaw that I picked up recently - an Ixes Basa 7 which is the big brother to my Scheppach Basato 5-4 (which will shortly be surplus to requirements)). Everything is in very good nick after a total strip down and clean -...

Festool belt sander and sanding frame

It’s the perfect thing for the job (if you don’t have a powerful wide belt sander (as I don’t)). I have a (quite old now) BS105 + frame and I think it is one of the best Festools I have. This one was rough before finishing with the belt sander I had read that the frame was unavailable, but...

How best to check for metal before sawing/planing

I have had a Lumber Wizard for years having seen Norm Abram use one on The New Yankee Workshop. It is unclear whether these are currently available in the UK (and I am sure my model has been superseded), but it looks like the one here Lumber Wizard 5 Metal Detector with Auto-Tune I use a lot...

Balancing Material - Forbo Furniture Linoleum

I don't know - presumably something that will behave like linoleum - would some wood veneer on the underside do this? I had not seen this particular application for linoleum, but might well consider it for the top of a reproduction mid-century oak desk I have planned - the original had vinyl...

Didn't ffx.co.uk use to have free delivery with no spend?

I think FFX are very good. I ordered a little router cutter last Saturday afternoon - it was about £20, so had free delivery - delivery was Royal Mail Tracked 24 and the webpage said order within x hours for delivery tomorrow, Sunday. I thought, well they have got that wrong ‘cos Royal Mail...

Scheppach HMS 260 (new to me) - Cutter Block Problems

If you contact NMA Tools, who are the main UK distributor for Scheppach, they will tell you if the replacement parts are available - [email protected] They may also have a copy of the manual and various workshop guides on how to replace or recalibrate things. For parts it will probably be Richard...

Am I out of touch ;-)

similar to @cmoops2 above, I called this a “:jumper” - it was much quicker in hard brick etc than one of these: and btw @Phil Pascoe thank you for the mine visualisation - fascinating! cheers

    Is the tool shortage over?

That reminds me of when i was buying my new table saw many years ago - the dealer helped me reconcile myself to the outlay by saying “it‘s only what some people spend on golf club membership” which was true. I don't play golf, but have used this rationale for all subsequent purchases - I could...

    Festool parallel guides ?.

I agree. Just to clarify, my qualification regarding long boards was only to allow for the view that you can do quick accurate repeat cuts with an MFT (which I don't have anyway) but that is limited to shorter boards. (Which is why I hang on to my set, even though they don't get used often)...

    Festool parallel guides ?.

I think the various comments, particularly from @sometimewoodworker above all support my original comment that these guides are unbeatable in doing repeat cuts on large boards. One reason I have not used my set as much as I might have done is that with the (relatively few) jobs I have done...

shop bought fancy furniture, how do they justify the price?

It’s a fair discussion. On the other hand, I am frequently amazed at how cheap some furniture is, often much less than it would cost to buy the materials to replicate. eg this example, which is literally the first result from a Google search for “bedside table” Farrow Grey Bedside Table I...
