    Oak tannin stains?

Thanks - there may be some lightening in places due to sunlight, but that is not the problem (and my photos are maybe not very good). Our problem is the dark brown spots that have appeared. Cheers

    Oak tannin stains?

Hello All We have quite a lot of oak in the way of stairs, internal doors and a large built in cupboard. This is all “new” ie modern oak installed in the past 15 years or so. Some of the oak needs refinishing, but I would like some advice on some staining that has appeared over the years...

    New TS55

I haven’t had time to look at the detail of the new 55 saws, but this looks interesting; after all, I’ve had my TSC55 for, oh, over a year now... Certainly a thinner blade makes a big difference - I have a little Bosch 12v (10.8v) saw that I use for odd jobs - that has a small, but very thin...

    Brass plating restoration?

Well, I am pretty pleased with the brass-plating results - these arrived back today. Here is a before and after: / The company I used for this was Brass Plating | Chrome Fix. It took a couple of months but it was a truly tiny job. My only problem now is matching the finish on all the...

    Brass plating restoration?

@Richard_C I just had this problem! (well, a similar one). I am restoring my father’s old model sailing yacht from the ‘30’s - seem to be called Pond Yachts. Various of the deck fittings that I thought were tarnished brass turned out to be brass-plated copper, whilst some other fittings are...

Withdrawn Evolution Rage 4 185mm TCT Multipurpose Saw 240v

Having been impressed by various YouTube reviews, I bought this saw from FFX Tools in September 2020 for a metalworking project but never used it (the project changed and it wasn’t needed). The saw has been taken out of the original box (that I didn’t keep), but has not been used at all, not...

    Mobile base for hammer f3

I couldn’t say for your situation, of course, but the jockey wheel arrangement makes surprisingly manoeuvrable - the machine can be spun so that it can be got precisely into a tight space (ie not just backwards and forwards). My spindle moulder is on a base similar to the Axminster one...

    Mobile base for hammer f3

I have a similar set up for my big Ixes/Scheppach planer and it is really excellent. I need to get the wheels and bracket for my other machines as it is so good for manoeuvring around a tight workshop. No doubt won’t be cheap, but will be worth it. Cheers

    Inca bandsaw

I replaced the two locknuts on the upper guide point spigot with a bristol type locking lever - this does the same job as the original lever on the lower guide point, but the arm can be indexed around out of the way as required. With the locknuts I found that the table was difficult to get...

    The Woodworker All gone..

Oh wow - I never win anything! Very chuffed thank you 😊 Cheers (off to buy a lottery ticket now)

    The Woodworker All gone..

I would like to throw my hat in the ring for these please. I would expect to peruse them (with a particular interest in following some of what my Dad would have been influenced by) and then I would pass them on in similar fashion. cheers

    Belt sander

@doctor Bob I know you don’t want Festool, but just to say that my Festool belt sander is an awesome tool - ok it’s very well built, being one of their very old models, and expensive to match - but the thing that transforms it is the sanding frame, turns a crude machine into a real precision...

    Axe

I bought a couple of replacement handles from these people Replacement Tool Handles | Bulldog Tools | bulldoghandtools.co.uk One of the jobs was a smallish roofing axe (I think) that again had been passed on by my Dad. I had found a historic spec of the axe and the original handle was a...

    Unsorted Joinery Grade

The explanation I had years ago from my Dad (to exactly the same question) was that the process of “sorting” started with extracting the least good timber, so that when you were left with “unsorted”, that was after taking out the least good grades up to a point as @Jelly has described. With that...

    Typical Typical Typical

At least that looks like honest wear and tear. I would not like to admit to how many sanding base pads I have replaced because I used the sander with no sandpaper. (Velcro does sand, but after a while you start to think hmm this is going slowly...) 😳 cheers

    Vacuum Workholding ( Vac Sys)

Actually, I just zoomed in on your photo - there are at least three specks of dust that I can see. Really - standards! (Perhaps the photo was taken after a long day’s work?) 🙂

    Vacuum Workholding ( Vac Sys)

I ummed and ahhed for a while before I bought my Vac-Sys set up, but would not be without it now. Yes, it is particularly useful for the Domino/Lamello and sanding. Get all the different pads. I did a write-up on the Festool Owners forum here My Vac-Sys setup As you can see, I plumbed in my...

    Finishing handrail

Incidentally, having stripped most of the old layers off, you may find it best to go over it all with some steel wool and meths or other solvent/stripper. I guess the original varnish was the gloopy type that is hard work to sand back. it’s going to look very nice. cheers
