    Lockdown Projects

Tackling a curved roof with pallet wood and salvaged parts must have been a headache. Great results though.

    Why is it called grain?

I've been googling similar pictures - I think you might be onto something. Flattened crops, harvested crops would have been an everyday sight

    Why is it called grain?

I like that analogy with cat/dog hair. Someone was struggling with a plane today and that would have helped me explain.

    Why is it called grain?

Evening, Is there a reason why wood grain is called 'grain'? I understand that it used to be small weight and of course wheat and flour are linked with the word. There even used to be a dye made from insect apparently: Earliest sense of the word in English was "scarlet dye made from insects"...

New member and intro picture of my tiny workshop

That is one beast of a bench - looks like your workshop was built around it! Fantastic space though and welcome to the forum.

    Help!

Did you buy the gravel boards from a supplier or did you have them at home? Suppliers will often store that stuff outside or partially under cover. Probably a lot wetter than you realise. I picked up some 3metre arris rail yesterday. Was up on the high racking outdoors and had to be forklifted...

    Modular toolbox/toolchest

I think their red range is below that in grade and price. They also get a lot cheaper when the deals are on. I forget some times when you are outside of the big cities that everything isn't just 5 minutes away. Not a very practical option when you have set aside three hours - I see why you are...

    Modular toolbox/toolchest

Have you looked at the Halfords ranges? They have a couple of different quality levels (usually on display in their branches). They regularly have deals and special offers on them if you can wait a month or two.

Early onset Parkinson's disease and woodworking

Afternoon Can you substitute different joints if the precise chisel work is becoming tricky? Rebates cut with a rebate lane with a plane instead of dovetails, halving joints instead of mortice and tenons or even dowel joints? For some projects - brass screws and screw cups can look quite...

    Newbie, few things I made.

That's a nice table top to get your hands on. Good functional piece of furniture that will get a lot of use and appreciation.

    Table saws and other animals..

As for newer saws being quieter - you'll have to spend some cash. The ones at the cheaper end of the market are painfully noisy. I have an old Record tablesaw now and it is much quieter. As for converting track saw and circular saws. Although there are lot of ingenious woodworkers and makers...

I like the shoe rack. What wood did you use for the top / seat?

How to make a Stanley Plane Lever Cap Sparkle again

That has put a smile on my face this morning! I can't be the only one who wants to see a picture of the assembled plane.

    Small workshop layout ideas

Fantastic looking workshop - was it a separate flat or set up as a workspace already? With the wall between the two doors - how often do you use this route? Is it occasional access to the garden or daily carrying baskets of washing to hang out? There's a lot to gain from having storage there...

    Should you speak the truth?

You tried to not bring it up - but your friend kept on asking and asking despite warnings!! He wasn't going to let it drop. That made it hard on you to avoid it. He sounds like the kind of person who might have cut you off in two years times in a disagreement over a parking ticket or borrowing...
