    Apple wood....

I just took down an old apple tree for a neighbour across the road. It wasn't a huge tree but it had reached the end of it's productive life. So, now I have quite a bit of kindling from the branches and a few logs. Max diameter is about 25cm. I have the ends sealed with wax and I plan to slice...

    Wood burning - Lime

I have had a load of lime tree (Linden) wood that I've used for both milling in to boards and for burning. Splitting with a wedge and maul is not too difficult. Chopping wood in general is good exercise. As the saying goes, chop your own wood, it will warm you twice! As for burning; it may not...

Nice box. Nice timber, especially for under a tenner! I've been to Albion Timber a few times and they sometimes have some really nice pieces at reasonable prices, but that was a steal! :)

It certainly wouldn't fit in my garden!:p

    What be this Timber?

First impression was Sapele, but could be Utile.

    Tree/Wood Species?

I have quite a bit of lime wood (linden) and it does have annual rings, though colour variation in the rings is not strong. Linden/lime is generally quite pale in colour so, I'd guess that it's not linden/lime.

    Lets see your wood

Nice pieces of timber! Be interesting to see the final results.

    A smoking ban?

Ha, I remember that advert. It made me laugh then and makes me laugh now! (I don't think Smash was better and certainly not healthier, but they sure knew how to market a crap product!) EDIT: OMG, the word C... R.....A... P... has been replaced by rubbish. Tell me if anyone reading this is...

    A smoking ban?

Personally, I'm against blanket bans.... (I mean, why should we not be able to have blankets? :ROFLMAO: ) Seriously though, I do believe that adults should have the right to choose to do what they want, provided no one else is harmed. But therein lies the problem! How do you measure the harm...

    Treating chopping board

Hmmm... not sure anyone mentioned "a board that should be scrubbed in hot water with an oil and wax dissolving agent". As far as I'm aware the idea of oiling a chopping board is to prevent it drying out and cracking and splitting. Probably also helps close pores to possible colonisation by...

    Treating chopping board

+1 for Mineral Oil. If you go for food grade you should be fine. As has been pointed out above, it is the main ingredient of Baby Oil, it is used in food and cosmetics and if you drink it it will act as a laxative. The amount that ends up in your food from a chopping board is negligible. The...

I have an 18 month old Great Nephew who would love to play with that. Though I don't know how long it would survive! :giggle:

    Reds under the bed!

Too right! Anyone who wants to have power over what others can and can't do is very likely to be unsuitable for such a position!

    India’s successful Moon Landing

I agree with most of what you said. I think Bonhoeffer was pretty much spot on. Sadly, the proportion of "Stupid people" seems to be increasing! Much of "stupidity" is down to laziness of thought, people don't want to be bothered with sorting through facts to form an opinion, they prefer to "buy...

    India’s successful Moon Landing

Right, it's got to be one of the dumbest misuse meanings. It was a long time before I found out that the expression came from an American (sigh... where else!) slang phrase "Stay woke" actually meaning "Stay awake" and referring to the various injustices in the world. It then somehow got to...

    India’s successful Moon Landing

@Terry - Somerset "Money is merely a means of exchange without which all complex societies would be unable to function." Partly true. It is an easy means of exchange. However, money has also become a means of gaining resources (money). As an example: The idea of the stock exchange was to allow...

    India’s successful Moon Landing

Technically speaking money is irrelevant. Access to resources is what counts. Admittedly, in practical terms this equates to money, because we (society) says it does. There are enough resources to go around, though we (mostly people in the "first world countries") would have to have a few less...

Precisely my point! And the answer to your last question is.... No!

    India’s successful Moon Landing

There seems to be at least two separate conversations in this thread. Returning to the original one; India has done a great job on a very modest budget; that probably explains the "Tom & Jerry style" animation of the landing :) Though to be fair the 75 million is just for this launch and not all...
