    I would support either side of centre of front face . Make a cut dead centre then jack up either side till level and slip another header or beam behind it to support the load.     Plumbing problem...

    His water supply is from a well, ours is too and we have a softner system which keeps it at bay. Otherwise our dishwasher would only last a few years. We are on well water also.

    Don't blame you, friend had an issue with his, luckily he had an isolation valve before it and changed it out. There was a lot of calcium build up around valve.

    Stain woes

    When I stain pine I use a pre stain conditioner then stain. As already mentioned the key is having the wood sanded or card scraped to the same level for equal absorption.

    Where I live in a rural agricultural area we have a local dump with a designated area for wood waste. Many times I returned with a truck load useable wood . My wife always asks what did you bring home.
