How do they get away with this?

FB marketplace is a very useful thing to use - and like other's Ive had some great bargains, and sold items that are just too bulky for ebay for prices that I can live with - not the most profitable because of a much smaller audience - but MUCH easier. I do report scam listing when I see them...

    Deep glossy clear finish

This stuff - it's a 2 part catalytic epoxy coating. You have to work quick but it can be thinned to make it go on easier. can be polished etc after. Word to the wise, it doesn't like playing with other chemicals - if there's even the smallest amount of other chemical like paint etc it's...

Is a satin finish REALLY preferred over gloss?

IMHO - gloss only works on wood that is either fresh and you get to dictate how much prep you do beforehand, and how much wetsanding and polishing you're prepared to do after - and a GOOD gloss finish needs a lot, or on old wood that has had lots of attention to bring it back to "glossworthy"...

    Nice skip find

Doesn't look like any oak I've ever seen - looks quite a lot like Douglas fir however, of which I've encountered a reasonable amount of. Nice find all the same. I skip dove recently to get at 6x good sized polycarbonate sheets that I had a use for (workshop side 'tween fence and roof beam) -...

    Sinking mortises in moulding planes

Are they just a ******* cut file with a handle? I say "just", you know what I mean, they look good and I can see lots of uses for them.

    Oak gate fix, any thoughts?

Yikes - I have to assume your customers didn't buy the gates or I'd be suggesting they bang the sellers door down to get THEM to fix the problems they created. This problem was always going to happen, it was just a matter of WHEN. I'll bet those gates were not cheap. I think as Ollie said...

    Have you noticed....

But most people are aware weapons kill people, but the way many drive they seem wholly UNaware that a 1/2 ton metal object travelling at speed has the same end result if control is lost or other driver error. It's almost as if most ***** drivers expect all the others on the road to drive in a...

    Have you noticed....

Ummm I forgot to mention in my previous post, and this is the honest truth - the road I was almost killed on was..... the A49 not far outside of Hereford, the very road of which you speak. I was working in Ross-on-Wye at the time and even though it's was signposted as 60 (back in 1997) as is...

    Ratio!?

Not what you asked for but a possible idea to reduce it being top heavy might be to have the top made in 3 parts - 2 halves with a thin central middle ring (ring not disk) - reason being you could then hollow out a lot of the weight from the two halves interior and use the ring as a disguise for...

Things appear to be a little different on the forum now.

Have to agree here - Conrad - we are but normal people here, and while there are some extremely knowledgeable, expert even, people on most things mechanical, I highly doubt a single member is some sort of "registered repair guy" for record power machines, even if such things exist. You need to...

    Have you noticed....

On the safety of cars I have two cousins, one is a paramedic, his brother a former fireman on appliances (firetrucks to you) and works now as a trainer of firemen. Both of them have the same feelings about cars - cars were fine as they were 50 years ago before airbags, side impacts, crash zones...

    Is it any wonder why.....

Why wouldn't I? You don't know me. I publically said on this forum that I was willing to give up a ventilator during Covid if my death served to save the life of a younger person or parent, feel free to check; of all the people to try to have this argument with - trust me - I'm not the guy...

    Is it any wonder why.....

How about we just kick out all the a-holes and only use "normal people" - those whom have spent decades in a particular field or have a group of say 5 people from said expertise to manage - education, healthcare etc etc, and each reform bill they suggest has to pass through voting by a group of...

    Is it any wonder why.....

Bring back the death sentence. If you try to kill another and can be proven with footage etc you forfeit all human rights and are sentenced to death. You tries to end thier life, so yours is automatically forfeit. Why should taxpayers pay more than the average wage in the UK to keep EACH...

    No No's on projects

You've obviously never seen OSB used in a decorative setting and treated correctly. Structually it can hold it's own pretty well, I;ve made seveal items from OSB, including a almost 2m tall pair of shelving units, sanded stained and varnished and it;s a lot more interesting that plain plywood...

    Stuck on this one..

Nope those are woven - I have a very fine stainless mesh bought for my homemade wooden PC case and use a mesh like this but much finer and the strands are woven, so over and over, thus not straight and I imagine almost impossible to straighten again. Oh NVM 6mm and welded, but finer ones are...

    Stuck on this one..

Written befre reading the 2 pages as I've got stuff to do today and can't get sidetracked :) The answer is don't do it to exact scale. Model kits are like this all the time - scaling down things like undercarriage support bracing bars for the main struts for old planes would mean they are also...

    ...ed Off...

Holy crap Cozzer that's absolute sh*te - that wasn't going to work under any circumstance. You do have recourse, depending on whether the people had a South Irish accent and preferred mobile living or not. If not then you can simply get a better tradesman to fix the issues then go through...

    Decline in Valued Contributors???

To be absolutely fair, that is a very good set of points Inspector, I'd not really given that aspect of the previous owners behaviour much thought and you're right again about some of the now departed members buying it (depending on price) as I'm sure they would have, given the opportunity, so...
