    Crumbling cement floor in workshop

The latex self leveling compounds are normally used under something like carpet tiles.

    Crumbling cement floor in workshop

The rusty rebar was the cause of the blown concrete, rust expands. I would have wire brushed the rebar, whilst wearing eye protection, to remove most of the rust. The rebar does not have enough cover to protect it from water. The feather edge (sloping edge) to the hole may not be a good idea...

    Crumbling cement floor in workshop

For the highest strength you want the concrete to remain damp as long as possible. When mixing concrete you want it to have as low a water cement ratio to be workable, it starts to get difficult to place if the water is less than half the cement. If there is too much water the cement...

    Stupid injuries

I was racking up grass in my garden and stopped to do something else. Something hit me with no warning in the face, it took me a few seconds to realise what had hit me. All I had was a bruise but it could have knocked out my teeth or hit an eye. I have treated rakes with more respect since...

    The cheek on some people!

If you have to get so many roads done by the end of your shift, would you sort peoples rubbish for them and maybe not get to some streets or do you empty all the correctly filled bins and get to the end of your round.

    The cheek on some people!

There are problems if no one spots it and just the bin men spot. If no one spots it it will go away with the garden waste and be composted. It will then end up in a garden and then make its way into the wider environment. If the householder did not spot the cup but the bin men did the bin...

    Selling tools on here.

Obviously during a flood the grinder would risk electrocution and oil based sharpening will cause pollution. Do diamond cards float, if so they could be lost.

    The cheek on some people!

Yes by post or in person at the Bank of England. They will even exchange very badly damaged notes but they will err in there favour.

    The cheek on some people!

30 September 22 is the last day to use old paper £20 and £50 notes.

The bank of England will change them for coins.

The £1 note went in the 80s. I think you can still get Scottish £1 notes but has been awhile since i have seen one.

    The cheek on some people!

Most murders are committed by people the victim knows. There were 534 murders last year, few are reported in the national media 689 in 2001/2 687 in 1992 618 in 1982 476 in 1972 299 in 1962 400 in 1952 406 in 1942 289 in 1932 243 in 1922 311 in 1911 Given the population increase it does not...

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

A room in the barn seems to have less of a damp problem than your shed. Putting a room inside the barn has a number of advantages and disadvantages. The foundations are already there, all you need is to level at a number of points under the joists. The barn will keep the wind, rain and snow...

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

The barn is owned by someone else so there is a limit to what he can do. Not sure why the timber in a room inside the barn should rot more than any other timber in the barn. That is assuming it is not in contact with the wet stone wall and floor.

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

I am a civil engineer by profession. Only built two buildings, steel frames on rc base in a power station. When I was at technical college around 1980 we studied where interstitial condensation would occur, calculated U values etc. But that was a long time ago and have not looked at my text book...

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

I assume that the workshop will only be heated whilst in use. The barn roof looks fairly new so little wind and rain would get in to wet the exterior but there would be no sun and wind to dry it. I have never used one but would a small solar powered extractor fan lower the moisture level...

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

I was thinking 4 x2 for framing around doors, corners, windows, where you are going to hang shelves, roof plate and 4 by 1.5 other places in roof and walls.

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

£2k seemed quite cheap to me. But since the workshop will be inside and not subject to the wind and snow could the walls and roof use smaller timbers than 2 by 4? Will you need to get on the top of the workshop. I have seen many offices in box type constructions inside factories and...

Building a workshop in an old stone built barn

I know the op suggested 4x2 feet to sit the floor on but I think it would be better to use engineering bricks, slate/ quarry tiles. The existing floor is very uneven with the channels for animal product etc. Square cut 4x2 will in many cases only be resting on an edge or corner. In some cases...

Which resin anchor should I use (old crumbly brick)

Also if using resin in a damp material you have to check that the resin can be used in the damp. Some resins can be used under water others do not like it damp. Some will be ok in a damp wall but you knock off say 20% off the tensile strength.
