    Working with brass

So is filing 22 tapered tuning pins from square bar stock viable? I don't have access to a lathe.

    Working with brass

Stupid question and the answer may be how long is a piece of string, but, how does filing and sawing brass compare to working with mild steel? I am in the early stages of building a 22 string harp in the medieval style and need to decide how best to proceed on the metalwork (tuning pins, cheek...

    Imperial vs Metric

Fair 'nuff, point still stands, system of 12 works in a society where most people had a limited education, if they had any education at all

    Imperial vs Metric

Well in the old days, we lived in a cardboard box in't gutter...an 1/8 of a pear drop were luxury just for birthday

    Imperial vs Metric

Actually, that should be £3.60/2.5/.125 (I think)

    Imperial vs Metric

    Now, ccalculate .125 of £3.6

    Imperial vs Metric

Ok, so pear drops are £3.60 a pound, how much is 1/8?

    Imperial vs Metric

I speak bilingual, but the system of 12 works in shops/stalls where half, quarter and third were important , I always used to buy 1/4 of sweets, even a ten year old could calculate the price of a fraction of goods priced by the pound in weight, ten is easy to divide by ten, but try quartering it.

What species of wood is this?

Cherry seems pretty likely, its too brittle for a bow. Ash makes a good bow, holly makes a great bow, hazel is better than both. What wood were you hoping to find? Or were you looking for something clean and straight?

    3 or 4inch thick willow, s wales

Really? Not sure Bridgewater is strategically near Caerphilly. Their website makes it look like they sell products rather than timber slabs

Utility blades in place of cabinet scrapers

I use small blades for scrapers but managed to give myself carpel tunnel from tightly pinching such a small object for prolonged periods when smoothing down narrow concave hollow-limb bows. 18 months 'rest' from all hand tool work really sucks, take time to mount the blades in some form of holder

    No, where are they?

    3 or 4inch thick willow, s wales

Hi all, Just wondering, on the off-chance, anyone know where I can source some furniture grade salix in 3 or 4 inch thickness by 12 inch width by 1m (ooh mixed measure alert!) length. Doesn't have to be dry, and yes, I am on arbtalk and have asked around nearby tree surgeons and timber suppliers

    Lidl Update

Funny though, their carving gouges were absolute rubbish but then that was more than ten years ago, maybe their quality has improved since

    Hawthorn

Paraffin wax should be fine, split them to the size you need them, halving is often enough, quartering is better, my timber store is in the same temperature zone as yours and I do get some minor shakes but they rarely more than 6 inches deep

    Hawthorn

Hawthorn is absolutely the best carving timber of all for very fine detail, I actually prefer it to box and hornbeam but be careful of inclusions. I cut as much as I can, split it and seal the ends carefully with pva, then leave in a cool space. Be aware narrow pieces can move a lot as they...

    The Lock-Picking Lawyer

Apparently bmw locks on that series couldn't be re-keyed or opened with skeleton keys as the key re coded the locks every time it was used, I seem to remember bmw offering to replace the entire central locking system as a replacement key was not an option. Watching the locksmith was a real...

    The Lock-Picking Lawyer

A while back my wife took her mum shopping in a bmw e45. She locked the car on the central locking then popped open the boot, put the keys on the boot floor, grabbed her bag and her mum shut the boot before she could stop her. We were very very glad of the skilled locksmith who opened the boot...
