    Hand drill how to fix?

I inherited this drill a long time ago. It would be a nice bit of kit, but the chuck is damaged and it has lived in a dusty space under my bench for the best part of a decade. I can't find any manufacturer's marks, how do I go about identifying/replacing/repairing the chuck?

    Bowling bowls

Such as? Was going to ask if you could elaborate, but I suspect "yes" or perhaps "no" might have been forthcoming ;-D

    Bowling bowls

Spying the bowling balls thread in the for sale section where these items were turned into rather lovely mallets, it made me wonder, are there other uses for redundant woods?

    Uses of box wood

In the past I've paid a fiver for a kiln-dried block 6inch, by 2 inch by 1 inch. It can be worth dicing up poor grade branch wood for e-bay sales. In the very distant past, some master carvers would work a maquette in box (admittedly some carvers would use carving wax) for their team to carve...

The most frustrating thing you have encountered lately

I am a luddite, if I want a window to open , I go an open it, if its cold I go and turn the heating on. My main concern (and I am not into conspiracy theories) is that companies like Google are leading/cajoling/leaving no option for everyone to store everything online, once everything depends...

    Uses of box wood

Box is fairly valuable but a very difficult wood to season because it is very dense and so is prone to splitting as it dries. It is prized by carvers, especially carvers of miniatures as it takes a phenomenal level of detail. Bowyers also like it as it makes a decent longbow

    Reamer DIY

I guess the cutter is slightly raised above the surface of the reamer "barrel"?

    Reamer DIY

So, I'm building a small harp and sourcing tuning pins is proving entertaining. One option I have is to file my own pins but if I step away from standard taper I'll need to make my own reamer. I don't think I've ever seen one, never mind made one, can they be made from hard wood, perhaps with a...

Glue floor tiles over wall tiles

My better half has found some tiles she really likes that she wants fitted on top of the existing splash back /bath tiles. Only thing is the new tiles are self adhesive floor tiles and they don't quite manage to adhere to the old tiles. I have warmed the new tiles to get the glue more sticky but...

    Nice old staircase.

Lots and lots of hours, like several man-years, figure on 3 to 5 days of hand-carving for each cherub, about the same for each stair "spindle", and those are the simple little quick pieces, the rest is much more time consuming....and the rest of the room is decorated in all sorts of carved work...

River bank edging - Which timber?

If you have to go timber and its staying submerged, elm is perfect, but, it is very expensive and not so rot proof if it is out of the water periodically. Fine fully submerged, not fine if it goes through wet/dry cycles

    Anyone re-enamelled a re-enamelled bath?

Our cast iron bath is comfy and tiled in place, I do not want to re-tile my bathroom but the bath needs a re-re-enamel. Anyone ever attempted it? Is it difficult or just time consuming or a job just for a professional. What sort of time-frame and cost would I be looking at? Thanks for looking

Workshop improvements Vs actually making stuff

Its all making stuff. I work full time and my shop time is very limited. Right now I am making crossbows, they are really difficult to make, possibly illegal to sell and my wife literally won't give them house room. I derive enormous pleasure from building them and improve my skills hugely every...

I don't think they would believe it nowadays?

No, but I remember my zx spectrum taking 5 minutes to download a 12k game off tape while listening to the data transfer in case the tape hiccuped and we had to start again.

    Blocking mice?

Funny thing, some mice like getting into traps, I supported some environment students who were surveying a woodland embankment. They trapped/marked/released mice over a few weeks and found certain mice kept coming back, warm safe room with tasty snacks supplied....
