    Sealing melamine?

Ok, so I have to fit a kitchen sink into a budget melamine top. A wet environment and chipboard are not good friends. Any advice on limiting water ingress?

Thank you, now I understand. I guess I’m with Alex.

    Mentor Wanted

Your work is perfect and beautiful, but this is where you may accidentally illustrate a point the other way. I often state I am not a joiner and I don’t use power tools. I drive myself to be perfect within my own craft but have no idea what is wrong, or right, in those pictures, I don’t know...

    How would you make this...

As an alternative, since you ask how I would do it, I would use a coping saw and rasp/file to cut the disc, and hollow with a couple of gouges, finishing with a scraper

    The new hammer

Our joiner was working over water when we were setting up a boat exhibition. He didn’t rope his favourite estwing onto his belt. Turns out those hammers don’t float very well (and the harbour authorities have a big problem with people going for a swim )…

    Mentor Wanted

This is a fascinating thread. I am self taught in woodcarving - I took most of my knowledge from magazines and books (it was pre-internet). No local knowledge was available to me. I am absolutely certain I would have learned more and more quickly had I been able to access face to face...

Wood carving hand tools: Vintage vs. NEW / Modern

Ok, so as a woodcarving instructor, I use a mix, buying in job specific gouges as needed. I like Sorby, Ashley Iles, Pfeil and Bristol Design, all excellent. Didn’t get on with Two Cherries gouges (personal preference) but their knives are excellent . My vintage gouges are easily as good, and...

    Old boat needs saving

for sure it’s a money pit, and a long term rebuild but every boat is a money pit - my favourite definition of a boat is “a hole in the water which you try and fill with money “. If you were looking for a wooden boat restoration project, this is a manageable one but you do need your eyes wide...

    Old boat needs saving

All true, but, there’s two types of people, those that like making/fixing and those that like using- in this case are you a boat restorer or a sailor? Regarding the boat, it is a rare thing this side of the North Sea, notwithstanding its very early date, it is a long-keel, double ended hull...

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

Most toxic I’ve used is Blackthorn, had to throw out all my stock, though I finished the bow I was building despite symptoms the same as a nasty chest infection and I only use hand tools…first question the doctor asked was what materials was I working with. Sad because it is an almost perfect...

    Old boat needs saving

This is the full advert, but there is an amended and abbreviated version of the advert on Apollo Duck which suggests she’ll be broken up soon, if not already. https://topsail.co.uk/product/2582/ I have no connection to this old boat but I also can’t rescue her and I hate to think that she’ll...

Ledged and braced gate between properties.

I wonder if there’s a practical issue re fences - you may not be able to get to the posts and joinery for maintenance if they are on the other side of the panels.

    Carvings on turnings?

The FB page was cool, but I’m not on FB so I did a search and found http://thedanielcollection.com/DanielCollectionP-Q.htm It is gob-smacking

    Carvings on turnings?

I love Chris Pye- his books and articles were very helpful when I started carving. Steliz, whose videos would you particularly recommend?

    Oak table finish refresh how?

We inherited a budget oak table but the finish is tired. Any idea what the original finish might be? Suggestions on how to refresh the finish would be greatly appreciated…

    Carvings on turnings?

So, I’ve been offered a lathe but I am a carver by inclination. Obviously I didn’t turn down the lathe but I was wondering about combining the two. Anyone able to point me in the direction of carvings on turnings? Be nice to get some inspiration.
