    Best handle wood?

Wow, leave the thread alone a few hours and see what happens! Thanks everyone! I am off to pick up new handles for my spade and fork ( yes fork 'andles) and while there will see if they stock ash and/or hickory. Anyway in digging out my yew I found a small length of knotty ash I totally forgot...

    Best handle wood?

It's a heavy hammer and is the smith's go-to hammer, his favourite... so no pressure. But, I also need to make a new handle for my favourite carving axe. He repaired my axe in exchange for me repairing his hammer. Re-purposing a pick axe handle might be a good call. Might make one out of yew...

    Best handle wood?

It's good quality yew, but I thought yew was toxic if it raises a splinter?

    Best handle wood?

I have to rehandle a hammer for my local blacksmith. It will have a hard life. I do not have any ash or beech or hornbeam. I do have apple, plum, oak, yew, cherry, hawthorn and hazel, holly and laurel. Clearly the yew and oak are bad choices. Which wood would you go with?

Can this furniture be saved from woodworm ?

If it were mine, I would completely dissassemble everything, knock back the varnish to expose the wood then thoroughly soak with insecticide. Once treated, re-varnish and re-assemble . If you don't do a thorough job you will always worry you didnt eradicate all of the little blighters (been...

    Chicken wire cupboard doors

My better half wants me to put a pair of doors over the front of a 1mx1m shelving unit. She wants the chicken and perimeter frame look, no bevels or moldings, just plain and simple. Construction type is up to me. I only have hand tools, but that shouldn't make much difference on this project...

Horological forum or is there someone here?

Used to work in a warehouse, pallet forks meant something else in there. Some of the drivers were quite balanced mind, but can't remember any of them being jewelled, not even any rough diamonds....

    garage re-roof

My single-skin, corrugated sheet, (single) garage roof is starting to show signs of nearing the end of its life. It's not leaking but the storms last week lifted a corner about 2 feet up before the weight of the timber stored beneath it slammed it back down (God is good). The garage is a very...

Now here's a challenge - what wood is this?

Elm has the best record of survivability in a damp/wet archaeological context. That'd be my first punt, grain looks very like a piece of elm I had delivered recently too

    Tenon theory

I checked my files, and after your comments (thankyou TheTiddles) its clear the 14th century maker used thirds. Thank you Jacob for the reminder/nudge.

    Tenon theory

It would, but harps are not often made like this anymore and I haven't found a drawing for this form of construction . Plenty of exterior drawings, none of the joints, although, I do have the papers by Karen Loomis...forgot those, just a sec. Yes, the joints are in compression

    Tenon theory

I am building a small lap harp. The pillar and neck are hawthorn the sound box black poplar. I am not a joiner I am cutting mortice and tenons, 3 of, forming a triangle, no glue, held together by the string tension of about 300lb, there will be a twisting force as the strings on the neck are...

    Neolithic adze from Ash wood

Trading in stone tools was an established industry, various quarries of sought-after stone types with associated areas of by-product from tool manufacture are well documented, along with tool marks and antler picks found inside mines and underground quarries worked for vast lengths of time...

There is a very active and knowledgeable stone and Flintknapping community on the Primitive Archer forum that would be very happy to help.

    Bowling bowls

I guess what I'm asking is whether their shape and/or material specifically lends itself to certain applications, such as turning for a bowl. I think I once read an engraver used a wood to make an adjustable pin-vice

    Hand drill how to fix?

The main cog is a Stanley orange in colour but doesn't carry the Stanley name. Quality is high though. The chuck should be 4 jaw but one of the jaws is missing.

    Bowling bowls

I have 2 sets of lignum vitae lawn bowls (aka "woods"), 1 set I bought 30 years ago, the other belonged to my dad. Both sets are stamped back to the early 1900s, both sets have lots of sentimental value but are also obsolete, only plastic 'woods' can be used nowadays in competition. Lovely high...
