    electric scooters

So, if my speedo is registering 33, it is quite possible I am doing a true speed of 30, and no offence is being committed. A (modern) car I recently owned with cruise control would cruise at a set speed with the speedo routinely reading a slightly differing speed. Those nice speed calibration...

    electric scooters

Wow, we've come a long way from the original post! Yes e scooters are a lot of fun, just be careful to pick one that's not too fast to be unsafe, if it goes faster than you can run, stepping off is going to hurt. Gloves and a cycle helmet are a good idea too

    electric scooters

I am a motorcyclist as well as a driver and do not object to scoots, ebikes eskates and the rest but stepping off a thing going 40mph when you hit a pebble you didnt see while outrunning a bus is not an option, you will die. Incidentally it was only a little too fast, like 33mph so not enough...

    electric scooters

They are serously getting on my nerves, very illegal even e-bikes are limited to being pedal assist and no faster than 15mph or else be classified as a moped and liable for all relevant motor cycle rules. Scariest thing I had recently was a guy on an e-scateboard trying to get by my car at...

    Hydrangea root ball prep

I dug out a mature hydrangea bush and am told the root ball is a burrl type thing. Is this true and if so how do I prep it for drying out/seasoning?

    Cleaving black poplar questions

I am attempting to rough out some 1m long slabs of black poplar from a wind blown tree, but even crosscutting my little 32cc chainsaw is struggling. I have cleaved 4 and 6 inch diameter timber but this log is 20 inches across and very wet. Does black pop cleave easily and would I be better...

    Uses for sambucus nigra

No, not much of a turner. Can turn, do a little when I need to but am mostly a woodcarver. Currently my main interest is crossbows and self bows

    Uses for sambucus nigra

I cut and split a pair of sambucus nigra, elderberry, stems which I hoped to use for bow staves. They both twisted severely as they cleaved, but I hate burning useful timber. What is s. nigra good for?

    Bay window seat

Boards are sound, more concerned about possible issues fixing to them to stop the thing sliding forward. Free standing will be ok, but what size timber would be best? Will 2x2 be sufficient? Sofas seem to be built from 2x1, 4x2 seems like overkill. What size ply is best for facing off?

    Bay window seat

My wife wants me to instal a seat into our bay window, nice and simple running straight across the opening. One complication, I can't fix to the walls as they are dry lined with very delicate plaster board. Also, the floor was infested with wood borers, successfully treated but they'd been...

    Fitted shelves, how?

No, not floating shelves. I was thinking of fixing 2x1 rails from floor to ceiling with cross battens to mount the shelves, arch, face framing, etc. I would hide the rails behind 3mm ply . Everything will be glossed.

    Fitted shelves, how?

My better half has decided we need to instal a fitted shelf/cupboard in one alcove to mirror the original fitted in the other. Now the original, I think was a set of shelves fitted to the stone then plastered in and faced off like this: I do not want to cut the shelves into the plaster, last...

Where has all the sand gone?

Both been largely unobtainable, along with plaster due to C19 impact on staffing at production and availability of vehicles as trucks switched over to transporting food and meds and with drivers off sick

Fitting window cill, not my normal work.

I always overthink stuff, had to make a window board in a hurry for my house when it became apparent the cill I was trying to fill and gloss was fibreboard over filler/cement/ rotten pine. Found a few lengths of 4x1 edge glued them scribed and fitted in an evening's worth of work. I was lucky...

    Good quality hide glue

I make my own from gelatine powder, the stuff for making jams and jelly. Mix with a little water. Makes very high grade glue. The glue should NOT smell.
