Buxus s. How easy to cleave?

I have been incredibly lucky enough to get a 75" long, 4" diameter stem of box (buxus sempervirens). I need to split this and seal the ends for storage. Does it have interlocking grain? How straightforward is it to cleave? Cannot bandsaw it as I don't have access to one, do have a chainsaw so...

    Log storage, need some ideas

My 'workshop' is a single garage and is nearly full of timber. Thing is, I'm a miser and a hoarder and my woodwork interests are many and varied, (currently bows and crossbows, bench-carving and chainsaw carving, a little spoon carving, harp-making, boat building, wooden bicycles....) At the...

    15th century style crossbow

From the 11th to at least the end of the 14th century the English used more crossbows and spent more on developing the crossbow than any other European nation, the Royal army carried over 1000 crossbows in normal times and multiplied that during campaigns, there are records suggesting over 3/4...

    15th century style crossbow

Umm ok, so the bendy bit is the prod, an American term, but the most common name for it in the Internet. In the UK/Europe we would call it a lath. The stock is known as a tiller. The mechanism is a pivot arm (the twiddly bit underneath, ot tickler) that locates in the base of a rotating...

    15th century style crossbow

Not an English style, more along the lines of a Saxon/Austrian type from mid to late 15th century. It's in the spirit of a high status weapon but not an exact replica.

    15th century style crossbow

This is one of my long term projects, been fiddling with it off and on since early 2018 but there was a delay of 18 months trying to get the metalwork sorted. The prod is yew and sinew covered in birch bark. The base coat of oil paint took so long to dry I gave up adding any more coats so it...

Canoe yawls, pretty much any design, but especially Albert Strange's Wenda top my wish list.

    Boat builders' thread

I wove a little coracle from hazel with a bit of skirting for a seat, covered it with a waterproof nylon cover tied on around pebbles. The cover was a mistake, too light in weight it wasn't totally water proof but it was massive fun for a few years when the kids were small pushing them up and...

    Remove grease stains from pine

I have a pine floor sealed with Diamond Wax. Spilled some greasy food and the grease penetrated a tiny scratch and stained the board. The wax is doing its job of preventing cleaning products reaching the timber. Other than stripping the wax, what are my options ? Vinegar? Steam? I have scrubbed...

Ceiling rose to flush fitting- help needed

NetBlindPaul, thankyou, I had a strong feeling multiblock connectors were not compliant, hence the question, if I know my better half, the fitting won't be up long and I'll replace with wagos

Ceiling rose to flush fitting- help needed

Thanks all. Wago clips look way easier than choc blocks! It's just a single switch, I'd disconnected the earth before I thought to take a photo. Its a downstairs light so I fastened to a ceiling joist. There's a bit of filling required to make good where the rose was but in the end I went...

Ceiling rose to flush fitting- help needed

I need to swap my standard loop--in ceiling rose for a flush fit (new, non-pendant light fitting), I'm not a sparks, but the advice the guy in the shop gave me to swap the ceiling rose for a multiblock connector doesn't feel right. Any advice? Getting in a professional has already been blocked...

    Salix (willow)

I ask this every now and then just in case, so if you think I've posted this before, I have. Willow is classed as non-commercial and not stocked anywhere that I have found. I need a slab 3 or 4 inches thick, 12 inches wide and over 3ft long, preferably green, straight grain and clear. Anyone...
