    Volts, amps etc.

Almost certainly the fan failing is a coincidence, albeit the quality of wall-wart style usb power adaptors is usually pretty poor so there is a possibility that the adapter over-volted the connected device. Unfortunately as with a lot of stuff these days, they are manufactured to a price point...

    Volts, amps etc.

Hi - the current taken is dependent on the drying box (the load) and not the capability of the power source (potentially up to 3A). So if the box is rated at 5V @0.5A then that equates to 2.5W which sounds about right for the intended use, so if you plug it into a USB socket capoablae of...

Bit size and type for 6.7mm timberfix screw for green oak

I don't have the Timco brand however the Timbascrew of similar size 6.7 x 100 measures - 5mm across the unthreaded shank 6.6mm across the crests of the thread 4.46mm across the root of the thread so 5mm pilot would give 0,8mm of thread or a 4.5mm would give full thread penetration but some...

    You guys

Belated birthday wishes Stig - boy do I wish I was as young as 41 again! Back then I pretty much didn't have a care in the world - married, full time employed and no health issues, and tbh its only in the latter 10 or so that things seem to have gone a little awry... Enjoy life to the full and...

Degreaser - which is best value and does the job.

I unexpectedly had to go out this morning - kettle died and Asda £16 model got good reviews online, so picked up some elbow grease too. Not tried it for degreasing yet, however looking at the constitùents it's pretty similar to most alloy auto wheel cleaners comprising anionic surfacants. Tried...

Degreaser - which is best value and does the job.

Paraffin is my usual go-to - if you shop around it's sold quite cheaply ~£3/L in most garden centres or DIY sheds for greenhouse heaters. I've not tried 'elbow grease' as @Sideways mentioned but I'll definitely will give that a try since it looks like its even cheaper and likely more...

    Worktop - oak

This is a repeat post but including some pictures for comparative purposes - I used Tung oil on my kitchen worktops, and one area that gets almost daily wiping and is exposed to spills from hot liquids is the area around my hob. This was purchased/installed 5.5y ago and from memory had a total...

    Identify this thicknesser

Hi Jamie - if it were me I'd measure the chain using this as a guide and match that to ones stocked at local supplier - it's highly unlikely to be anything bespoke or exotic. The broken chain has a split link so it would be relatively simple to obtain a replacement of the correct size/pitch and...

    Worktop - oak

I have oak block worktops bought 8y ago at Ikea - they don't seem to stock them now, however I finished them with Tung oil and even around the flush fitted induction hob where it gets more frequent wetting either from wiping up splashes or mopping up floods when I've had something boil over the...

    Here's my one

Haha! - I at one time had an FJ1200 fitted with Krauser panniers and a top-box, and yes I did use it for commuting daily between High Wycombe and east London - Docklands before it was fully built up! I mainly used the top-box but did on occasions use a single side pannier and yes I did have the...

    Here's my one

@aet1 - that looks a bit of a beast!! I stopped riding when I was in my mid-fifties, last bike I had was a Ducati 996 my 2nd bought from new and sold with 35k on the clock - I used to commute 80 miles a day on it!! Happy days - eh? !!

    Plane Irons and ProEdge

I can't remember what I paid for mine, it was so long ago but I suspect likely £40 or less. I don't have any jigs for it but I might try fabricating one for my 10inch planer blades. I only use it for removing major chips out of chisels since it is so fast at gross material removal without risk...

    Plane Irons and ProEdge

I have a Sharpenset that I picked up 2nd hand very cheaply and locally when I lived in High Wycombe - they are brilliant for knives which I surmise was their principle target market but also for chisels when rapid grinding is called for. The water cooling system works so well I have on occasions...

Why am I crap at measuring?

Totally agree with that, story sticks imho are far better when repeatability is required, and also when likely parallax errors esp when wearing glasses are necessary. TBH the accuracy and repeatability are all down to technique irrespective of the actual device used and things like depth stops...

    Have you noticed....

I think a similar unforeseen result was seen in the USA when the majority of car manufacturers fitted bumpers capable of withstanding low-speed - as-in parking lot speed collisions, subsequently there was a steep rise in these collisions being reported.

    Men Sheds!

Not sure where in Essex you are, however your experiences sound all too familiar with my own - as someone who volunteers for an Essex based charity and was approached to assist setting a mans shed up. Initially I offered to use my own workshop on a limited invite basis, however they -the Mens...

    This morn's interesting postbox...

Haha!! My post included one from Guy's and St Thomas's in the vein of come in Sir, your time is up! - the non replaceable battery in an implanted loop recorder I have is about to run out and requires replacement..!!

    Child safe finish

Tung oil is food-safe - it can be used on wooden serving bowls, utensils etc so I would assume child-safe too. You can adjust the level of sheen too if that's important Ed

What is your pet peeve injury in the workshop?

Mwinfrance - same here - although I don't have a clotting problem most cuts seem to bleed profusely before stopping and many a time the only time I've known I had a cut is when I wonder why my fingers are stuck together or in summer when some toes are 'glued' to my flip-flops!
