Help me find a new utility knife

I too am a fan of Swann Morton scalpels and have owned and used a nickel alloy handled No.3 with 10A blades for over 45y and yes the blades do blunt noticeably if used on tough materials, however if bought in quantity the blades work out @13-15p each so pretty cheap. I find that genuine Swann...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

That's pretty much the case - I dipped the tip of my left ring finger into my surface planer - complacency is most likely reason as the piece of timber was quite thick and didn't really require push sticks however I'd inadvertently let that finger dangle as I guided the wood through, and...

Designing hardwood window frames - design tips?

The stuff mentioned above is all good - at the point I needed to make window frames for my workshop I only had a Kity 613 bandsaw and a small Bestcombi and certainly the latter was not man enough to cope with the sections required for double glazed units. I too looked over some of the big...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

Ouch! - sounds like you were lucky to get away relatively lightly, albeit unfortunate and I can imagine very painful. You don't mention, however wouldn't 2 push sticks one to feed and another to apply pressure to the fence have prevented this unfortunate incident? Over my DIY woodworking career...

    Bloody cold shed!

I forgot to add - I also do a fair bit of metalwork so have lots of mild steel and other materials lying around amongst the timber and even after years with no surface protection I don't get any surface rust - so it stays pretty dry in there...

    Bloody cold shed!

As with newbiegirl my workshop is fully insulated with 80mm Celotex and internally lined with a 15mm void behind the internal 6mm ply lining and whilst I'm not as exposed weather-wise and don't have any continuously-on heating it does not take much to get the interior up to a workable temp. Also...

New member overwlemed by a new 24BAO/S - 24" Thickness Planer

I move my Myford 254S lathe around on some 1" 3mm wall hollow tubes bought locally from IS&G Steel - it only weighs ~700Kg including its metal stand so less than half the weight of your beast but I can move it around unaided - it's on an albeit building standard spec suspended workshop floor...

    Aged brass round head screws?

One thing to be aware of but maybe not applicable to screw heads is the fact that most brass -and certainly door furniture are usually varnished, and that this can be quite difficult to remove with the current dumbed-down Nitromors type products. I di=ont know if the manufacturers bake it on...

    Aged brass round head screws?

I'd 2nd using Tourmaline to age brass - I think it actually contains a dilute acid , likely Nitric but it works pretty quickly like in 5 mins you'll see a colour change. The trick is to lock that change in and make it more durable - so once you've got the effect you want, rinse in water and dry...

Oil finish for outdoor oak table

I'd echo what others have said about durability of transparent finishes especially on horizontal exposed surfaces, the UV exposure alone will discolour the wood and likely degrade the finish over time. Having said that I would recommend Tung oil which if applied thinned at least 60% with white...

Kitty 613 bandsaw blade length confusion

I've owned a Kity 613 since new some 30y ago and there does seem to be lots of minor changes/mods that took place during their run in production. Glad you've got yours sorted, I've found it to be quite a capable and versatile machine once setup correctly. I'd recommend speaking with Ian at...

Vice lubrication, rust prevention - Spares

I've used Castrol LM on mine for many years - and yes it does get clogged up with wood dust and detritus however I've never had it bind up and it keeps the threads and guides nice and shiny...

    Howdens v click flooring

Not laid any Howdens flooring but in principle any floor will move over time so an expansion gap around it is essential to prevent warping or lifting - I remember back in the day a mates dad had had parquet laid in a new-build open plan living room and with no expansion gaps left the floor...

What improvements do you think i could make to my jig?

Hi Elisha, I think I get what you have done - by using the T-slot you locate your jig relative to the blade and by perhaps having a slot cut across the jig into which a cross-piece affixed to the yellow plastic cross-slide you keep the jig parallel to the slot. Then by loosening the black knob...

Nano / graphene / ceramic finishes?

Interesting stuff, as the manufacturer states this provides a hard drying protective coat and can be used on matt finishes - so does not in itself add much gloss. So as with most finishing the underlying surface prep is paramount and polishing that 1st before applying this protective finish is...

Titan 2000w 40cm chainsaw. Anyone used one?

I have one of the older ones and it has served me well cutting down a lot of dreaded Leylandii - back in the day Screwfix never used to sell spare chains for them and after cutting one stump a little too low and running it through some soil the chain was knackered pretty quickly! Fast forward 5...

    Opinions on wood:leather bonding

Given that the leather is going to be subjected to pressure I'd have thought that over time the leather will if anything compress and hence 'squidge' out somewhat, so I'd have thought that even a clean cut edge will become somewhat ragged over time. I guess a lot will depend on your individual...

    Best joints for workbench

I don't have any pics of the locating pegs but this maybe gives an idea and was built in 2011 so has seen a fair bit of use and abuse since and it's still very serviceable!!
