    Setting up a plane

Hi @lee1596 - I don't know where in Essex you are located however if you want some hands-on assistance I am happy to oblige -I am based near Kelvedon. PM me if that would work for you

    Need to escape/reset

Hey Stig, lots of good advice in this thread for you to consider, and for sure you are dealing with a lot and by sharing this I am sure it will be in some ways cathartic for you. I echo others advice to seek help, whether via your GP, RBL, or a nearby mens-shed. I through a charity I volunteered...

    Joke Thread 4 (closed).

On the subject of being divided by a common language, I've always found it amusing that Americans go horseback riding as if riding other parts of the animal was a commonplace activity..

Cutting 4mm mild steel with jigsaw

That might be a challenge with a jigsaw, personally I have cut quite long lengths of 4mm using an angle grinder and 1-1.6mm thin metal cutting disks. With care and a bit of practice even 1-2m long cuts can be made quite accurately, you just have to exercise care since the disks are quite fragile...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

Thanks- mine are of that type but don't appear to be the culprits... - will have to open up some manholes when the weather is better and take a peek to look for stuff escaping !!

    Fancy a new hi-tech project ? a wooden satellite

Interesting - I know diddly-squat about space stuff however I do contribute to a global meteor network project that uses RaspberryPi credit-card computers and super cheap cctv surveillance cameras (circa £25 incl lens) to record meteor activity using some funky code - think similar tech to ANPR...

Can't find the water valve in the street. Any ideas?

As others have mentioned, you do have I think a time limited option to switch back should it not work out for your needs. I must admit I have been struggling trying to work out why mine has been creeping up and in my latest bill Anglian Water report I am using 24% more than similar dwellings in...

Nature of the game WARNING this post contains graphic images of a hand injury

I sympathise too, am only a DIY'er but I do hope you make a good recovery and can get back to work soon. I had a near miss with a spindle molder and a wobble saw, was making some stopped cuts to create a slot in some hard American maple and offered the workpiece to the saw blade a little too...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Umm, I'd disagree. Am Essex based and had open fields both front and rear and the house front faces west - so the wind is either blowing front to back or the vice-a-versa. When we have storms blowing stepping outside via a side door and mug of tea usually results in half the tea being lost in...

Good router bit for use with a Sled (sledge?)

I made a router sled to surface my American Maple workbench 760 x 2250mm using a pair of long levels as guides and one of these 35mm bottom trim cutters. I don't have any photos of the jig as it was back in 2011 but recollect I only had a 20mm guide bush to hand so had to fit the cutter after...

Chalet door design - source or build.

As you've discovered doors and frames to suit those kind of dimensions are not cheap, but if you make them yourself you'll save a lot of cash. For my workshop built 13y ago I was concerned about noise insulation and as I had some 170 x 47 lengths of joists left over I used them to construct the...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Unsure where in Essex you are however IS&G steel are local and in my experience quite competitive on pricing so worth a call. They stock stuff in 4.6m lengths but do offer a free torch cutting service if you can then fit it in your car - or if you have a battery powered angle grinder that would...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

I think you're asking for trouble - with a 2° slope the potential snow loading will cause significant flexing of those joists at those spans and spacing - you may even have problems during heavy rain since that shallow a run off will result in significant amounts of standing water building up...

    Quarter-sawn tonewood boards

E O Burton in Brentwood, Brooks Bros in Maldon, and Thorogood in Ardleigh - as @profchris mentioned are the nearest suppliers who can help you, albeit as @graham88 & @Cabinetman have mentioned I would question why you would want to choose a wood that will flex given that will add potentially...

    A sharpening thread :-)

As with all techniques - it's what works for you that counts!! - but agree, used wet they cut much faster but I suspect leave a less polished surface at the grit ranges I finish with. Was really only pointing out that cheap roll based papers glued seem to last for ages and are I suspect cheaper...

    A sharpening thread :-)

I use abrasive papers from plain rolls and stick them to a piece of float glass using Screwfix No-nonsense spray adhesive - I attach 120 grit one side and 240 on the other and then move on to 320 silicon carbide wet-n-dry which is merely laid on and not glued to the surface of the 240 - the...

    H-beam buying?

If you were closer I'd invite you around to cut of what you want from some I have that were ordered too short after my builder mis-read my dimensions of a mitred joint... - I have maybe 6m lying in my garden of 152 x 89 x 4mm web + 4mm x 310 plate welded to enable it to span a 100mm cavity....
