    A new phrase?

There's more than one - Vennells. Who? Me? I was only following orders (from my staff) I always find I get the best advice from those at the coal face. They know what they're doing. Paula

    Charnwood 10" Drum Sander ?

How precise do you need the thickness to be? Wood is such a variable material and you will be doing well if you achieve +/- 0.1mm within the same piece of wood. With such a large quantity to process, wear of the abrasive will be another variable. Have you got dust extraction? If not, wearing a...

    Cars that make you smile

That just about sums up my attitude towards cars. If you're going to have 4 wheels, get the maximum carrying capacity out of them, so most of them have been estate cars with towing hooks. I've had a Herald, Hunter, 2 Allegos (nowhere near as bad as their reputation), Astra, Montego (ran it for...

    Cars that make you smile

Saw A Maxi today, that made me smile. The one I owned 40 or so years ago certainly didn't. Brian

    Three way

All these fancy joints were necessary because mechanical strength was required in addition to the inadequate glues then available. Now we have CA glues which are specifically marketed as Mitrebond. The only requirement here for a successful bond is that the mitre faces be accurately machined and...

    THE FOURTH OF JULY

It's a good job that not everyone takes that attitude otherwise we would have a dictatorship and change would be decided on the battlefield.

    Rolled Zinc Glazing Bars

Don't forget my suggestion of 15mm aluminium which is definitely available and won't rust. The dome could be created by application of epoxy filler. Filing that down will be a lot easier than steel. Brian

Wooden nails? Who’d of thunk it?

From your link:- It is driven into a hole bored through two (or more) pieces of structural wood. As pointed out to me earlier in the thread, these things are fired into the substrate. Find out more here. Cross section of the nail inserted:- Nail - beech, timber - pine Can't be used in...

    No 3 plane too small

I've always been under the impression that a #3 is just a narrow #4. In view of the comments here, I thought I would check. Here's a couple of pics of my Stanley #3 and Record #4:- As can be seen there is practically no difference between them other than the width resulting from blade widths...

    Tree in a tree!

Just had a look at it on Streetview. It's probably about 10ft. I imagine it was causing problems at the farm entrance. Brian

    Tree in a tree!

I know a farm in Somerset that has a large old ash tree growing by the entrance gate. At some point in the distant past it had been pollarded causing several new growths to develope around the periphery. These were about 9" diameter when I last saw them some 10 years ago. The middle of the ash...
