    Woodwork design books

Recommending it? Now that's a difficult question to answer without knowing in more detail what Sienew's requirements and aspirations are. All I am saying is that there is a lot of design details in this book and for the cost it's worth a punt. Brian

    Woodwork design books

I've just counted the number of furniture design books on my shelf. To my surprise there are 22. All except one cover a design theme, eg, Art Nouveau, Shaker, Victorian, chairs, etc, etc.. These are all useful for browsing in an effort to find inspiration or for just plain copying. The one...

Honing bevel on a chisel with hollow grind

Just voted for 'some other' My system, if you could call it that, is more random than crazy. Whatever it is, it gets the job done. Brian

    Woden - who they?

I seem to remember, and I may be mistaken here, that Woden was a cheap range of tools that could be brought in Woolworths in the 50's. On the other hand I have a Woden No.7 plane which is of good quality and a joy to use. Brian

    Best external finish for elm?

It was not the best choice of species by your father. It's likely to distort and it fares badly with changes of humidity. Almost any finish will delay the onset of degradation to some extent but an oil such as Danish which can penetrate the surface would best. Brian

    Storing kiln-dried oak outside

I would be inclined to minimise air circulation as that will just increase exposure to the humid atmosphere. The timber is kiln dried so it will absorb moisture if at all possible. How long are you planning to keep it outside before using it? Brian

Ratchet straps, do you have a favourite (for woodwork)

Are these what you're thinking of? I've had a pair for many years and have been the answer to clamping large items on many occasions. I think mine are Clarkes but these Screwfix ones will be just the same. Brian

    Buying wood from tree surgeons

I've done it a couple of times. Firstly, some yew which you can read about here. Secondly, a medium size maple which I had felled in my garden. The tree surgeon left me the trunk for milling and the rest for firewood. The trunk weighed about half a ton so the handling issue needed to be...

    Self- Sharpening Chainsaw - Really?

After many years of use it was time to replace my Bosch electric chainsaw. I decided to go for one of these new-fangled self-sharpening jobbies. Oregon have a good name and they were on at an attractive price at Screwfix so that's the way I went. My first attempt to use it was a complete...

    Aviation enthusiast??

On a "training" flight today in a 1943 Tiger Moth at Duxford. Whilst we were up there was an emergency situation at a nearby airstrip so all the Duxford fire tenders rushed off to join in the fun. My chauffeur was advised by ATC that no commercial aircraft could land in the absence of fire...

Going around ever decreasing spirals until disappearing up.........

I would be inclined to produce CAD drawing and from that make a 6mm MDF router pattern by bandsawing and hand sanding to finish. A bit laborious but easier than trying to cut and finish the final workpiece in one go. If I can help with a drawing get in touch. Brian

    Woodworm!

That sounds more like it - ties in with the debris and the patterns of the grooves. Brian

    Woodworm!

I would say the regular lines are only on surface and have been caused by somebody chewing it away, possibly wasps gathering pulp for nest construction. The damage on the end might have been caused by worm but the fact that some of it is on the surface suggests it was there before the timber...
