Do you make angle cuts often? I mean anything other than the common mitre cuts for skirting or tapers for table legs?

Withdrawn Workshop Downsizing - Clamps, Cramps & Squeezy Things

We've taken the momentous decision to downsize our home, garden and workshop. It's not going to happen for a few years yet but we want to get the property ready for sale should something interesting turn up. In recent times I've been concentrating on smaller, more intricate projects. No more...

What ideas have you had for reducing Electricity consumption

@Fergie 307 I have been doing this for 20 years since boiler was new. After it was installed I was perplexed to realise there was no way of stopping the DHW temperature being maintained throughout the night. It was just a waste of energy. The boiler is due to be replaced in a few days because...

How do I purchase wood from a Sawmill

+1 for Vasterns at Wootton Bassett for kiln dried timbers. Also Jim Hannis at his good old fashioned sawmill in Cranham Woods near Painswick. Air dried only. PM me and I'll give you his phone number. Brian

    Keeping kiln dried timber dry

One suggestion to make some progress and help with the storage problem - ASAP saw all the component parts with a generous planing allowance. Stack it for a while to allow any consequential movement to come out. Then proceed with planing in 2 stages with a rest period between each. Brian

    Keeping kiln dried timber dry

12% doesn't sound like very kiln dried to me. I would expect something more in the region of 8%. 14% can be achieved with air drying alone. If it is as you say then it's not going to alter much in your workshop. I would take a small sample and put it on a c/h rad to accelerate the drying out...

    Planer or Jointer?

I came across this picture in Campbeltown Museum on the Kintyre peninsular in Scotland:- Campbeltown is a centre for whisky distilling and the museum featured a cooper's workshop. Here the cooper is preparing the edges of barrel staves - curved and at an angle. Quite a skill and all done by...

External NVR placement on Dewalt 745 after near miss

All you need is a momentary stop switch (press to break) in series with the NVR stop switch. You can place this wherever you wish. In fact you can have several switches in series. It will break the NVR latching circuit so the current handling is negligible. I had to replace one (panel mounted)...

    Feeling old

Many years ago my young grandson was trying to understand what death was all about and what the word 'dead' actually meant. We had recently suffered the loss of two of his great grandfathers, one of whom he knew, the other was just a name to him. His only experience of death so far was a...

    Generator transfer switch

This is all about risk assessment. I've used the double plug cable method once in the past; in the 1987 big storm when our lines were down for a week. I rigged it up for my elderly neighbours who were in a desperate situation. To mitigate against any risk of interference, the connection was...

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

That's a really big ask for your small kit. I would recommend finding a timber supplier and go and discuss it with them. They will able to show you what their stock is like. Seek advice from the members here for suppliers near you. Brian

    Scratter Vs wood chipper

Here is my scratter as referred to in my earlier post:- Not mentioned before but the screws are positioned in a spiral pattern. The one improvement I could make is to have a set of stator screws to stop the odd lump of apple passing through between the hopper and the drum. However that is...
